laptop bios

i want to upgrade my bios version so it will support w2k pro. the book says you have to have your ac adapter plugged in and your battery has to be fully charged. my battery is completely dead. are they
saying the battery must be fully charged so that if you loose electricity you will not destroy your
motherboard. or is there another reason to have your battery charged also.
i have an old ibm 380z laptop and i want to go to the latest bios. thanks Slyedog

I'm surprised it does not say why in the manual. If you're worried, best place for info would be IBM knowledge base, or IBM Tech Support.
Even if you do find the reason, or if you find none, I would have a fully charged battery in, just to be safe.
