Laptop battery not holding charge after fresh Windows 98 installation

Hey folks,

A friend was having some problems with his Gateway Solo 2500 series laptop so he asked me to redo the system for him since some of the Windows files were corrupted and his system wouldnt boot.

I plugged in the AC adapter and charged the battery fully before proceeding to work on it. Left the AC adapter plugged in all the while and successfully formatted and installed Windows 98.

That was as far as I got...

Once the laptop is booted now, even whilst the AC Adapter is plugged in, I get like about 5-10 mins max until the unit switches itself off due to the battery running out of juice.

It'll charge back up to 5/5 bars and then once switched on again... same thing, within 5-10 mins it's dead again.... In windows the icon for the charger shows that the battery is charging but it deteriorates quite quickly.

Is it definitely a bad battery or could my charger be damaged? It's a little confusing since things went so well for the installation which lasted about 30-45mins without problems.

All ideas are welcome!

Try taking the battery out and see if it'll run plugged in.

Thanks for the recommendation, forgot to mention that I tried that and it would not power on unless the battery is in. Also disabled mostly anything that should not be in use but makes almost no impact on how long it's remaining on.

Ok, so I took the battery out and left it out of the system overnight, when I put it back in this morning it's not even charging, the system wont come on at all with or without the battery in it so I guess its time for a new battery!

Actually most notebooks should come on without the battery.

You are sure it's not a hosed power supply?

I have no idea if the adapter's gone bad... the green light on it comes on when plugged in but that's the most I know...

Before I get a new battery I think i'll take the adapter to an electronics store and have them test it to see if the output looks about right.

Thanks for your input!
