Lapping Surfaces

Alright, I have my SLK900U and its good, but not performing as i thought it would with the 92mm Tornado, so i think Im gunna lap the base. I dont have any glass, but i do have a marble tile thats approximately 12x12'' and i would assume is quite flat due to the fact that its a tile.. Would this be a good surface to lap on? I suppose so as long as its flat...? Thanks

Honestly, anything flat works. I used a nightstand with a piece of acrylic. Though I think the nightstand would have done the trick alone. Glass, hah, who has panels of glass laying around? Honestly it doesn't matter as long as the heatsink makes even contact with the sand paper. So yea, marble counters work fine, just make sure you clear the area, and wear a face mask for precautionary reasons. Breathing in copper scrappings aren't friendly to your lungs.

What he said. Anything really flat. Be sure to rotate the heat sink a quarter turn every few minutes to ensure even sanding. What kind of T.I.M. are you using? Are you sure the HS was on there correctly? Also, how's your case ventilation? You could have a 1,000 CFM fan on there, but if your case has no airflow, your CPU is gonna burn up.

well, im using just the TIM that came with the heatsink (yes, i know, thats a big no-no, but didnt have any AS3) so that could drastically raise my temps, i dunno. Perhaps i didnt install the heatsink properly. I think my case airflow is pretty good.. I got the Chieftec Dragon style case, with 2 rear exhaust fans, and that tornado sure whips around a lot of air by itself too

I'd suggest getting some thermal compound before doing any lapping of the heatsink

cause i think that will help with temps alot, also what kind of temps are you getting?

Roger that! AS3 will drop your idle temp by 3C minimum as compared to the stock white goo or pink pad.

Get some Ceramique if you're going to buy a new syringe of compound. Good stuff.

with my Tornado at 3000rpm, unoverclocked 2500+, i get around 35-36*C idle. I dont have any full load temps (SETI, F@H) because i dont have any of those installed,but after a long session of Enemy Territory, im about 39*C... Id like to buy some Céramique, but i dont think any local places have some.. =\

Those are great temperatures why are you lapping again? <-- SLK-800U Tornado 5000RPM 45/60C idle/load. This is with 34C ambient (it's like a toaster in my room)

ya, not sure why you are trying to lap...

those temps are better then average, my bro's pc gets upper 48's - 50's and i dont worry since they are made till about 90c...

well ive seen some ppl with a 900U and a 92mm tonado getting insanely low idle temps of around 24*C :Q I was also talking with a friend and he has an SLK800A and an 80mm tornado and he was getting 26*C under full SETI load so..

Maybe his temperature sensor locations are different than yours and you're not comparing equivalent temps.
