Lapping my shim, will it help?

I need to lap my copper shim, so I was using 600 grit sandpaper but I seemed to be getting nowhere. I bought artic silver II but due to how thin it needs to be applied I cant make good contact due to the thickness of the shim(the regular good is ok when used in a little bit thicker layer). I was doing fine with the grey stuff until today when my CPU temp shot up 8C. Is it time to just lap the shim and use the ASII?
thanks,

you do realize that the shim does not help to cool you cpu right? it's only a safety factor against cracked chips.

No don't apply AS to the shim, only worry that its too tall and prevents your hsf from making contact with the core. But it has nothing whatsoever to do with cooling. If anything a metal shim is a hindrance where a non thermally conductive one would almost benefit the cooling process by not allowing thermal radiation to further heat the ceramic of the chip, so thereby creating a one-way channel for heat from the core to the hsf without feedback.

the shim is only used to prop the HS up.

it is NOT used for cooling.

in fact, as already stated, adding AS to the shim will make it thicker, which means the HS is not touching the CPU at all, which is very bad.

the only thing that should get AS is the cpu core.

I know the shim is for protection, that is why I use it. I said in my message that I was going to lap it so that my HS could make good contact with the CPU. I guess my question is, will the AS help get the heat off the cpu even if the heat jump is due to the ambient temp of the room?
thanks,

Um sorry I misunderstood what you was asking, seemed like you was wanting to put AS on your shim. Since it isn't used for heat management, take some 220 grit to it, or 330. It don't need to be pretty just thinner.

Man I need to get glasses.....😀 Oops too late, maybe I need better ones or to pay attention to what I am reading better. 😱
