The hardware store here have only 600 Grit and 1500 Grit sandpaper. From lapping info I got it's usually from 400-600-800-1000-1500-2000 Grit but those are not available for me here. Can I jump from 600 to 1500 or should I use 1500 until the bottom smoothens out? I'm going to lap a thermaltake volcano 12. I asked this at the cases and cooling and didn't get any response. Any help would be great. I'd like to maximize the cooling of the cpu coz I'm going to overclock it.

Any helpful info? seeng that the aim of lapping is to make sure the HSF is flat and maximize contact does using 1500 Grit only sand paper work fine?

I had the same problem so I just used 400 then 600 on a Volcano 12. Mobile 2400+ @ 2400 at 1.8v; idles 30-34; load 41-44, so it's alright, though I know it could go lower if I could have continued after 600.

Ok I should hopefully get the stuff I ordered tomorrow. I'll lap from 600 Grit and 1500 Grit and see what happens. Wish me luck...

I had this dilemna and ran into no problems when going from 600 Grit to 1500 Grit, the heatsink (SLK-900A) looked great and Ishaved off 4C from my load temps by doing so.

Use 1500 and lap for 30-40 minutes with some water. Should be very shinny. Let us know if it worked and if have lower temps.
