Lapping, is a process in which you sand your processor or heatsink until the surface is flat as it can be.

Usually you'll lay down a piece of sand paper on a flat surface, like glass. Wet the sand paper a bit and hold your heatsink flat and sand in circular motions. Keep sanding until the surface is totally flat. These days hardly anyone ever lap the cpu anymore unless you have an older celeron, because it's extremely dangerous to lap the cpu now because of the new packaging.

I just lapped my old Celeron 366 that does 550 this week since it has just been sitting around for several months and I hope the lapping will help lower the voltage needed to keep it stable.

The process went very well. I followed the Slug Sanding How-To article and everything was a piece of cake (more sanding that what I figured, though).

Be advised that you can of course damage your chip beyond repair, but if you are careful and follow the article, you should not run into any problems.

Thanks, I was just curious after seeing people talk about it and not having heard of it before.
