Lapping a water Block

I'm thinking about lapping my water block and 9650 to gain a couple of more c's of headroom.

All inputs and warnings welcome....don't want any leaks.

NEVER lap waterblocks. That's a sin.

They're already machined to a flatness that you could never achieve by hand.

Edit: By all means lap your 9650's IHS. Oftentimes they're terrible. I lapped my Q6600 and dropped 7º C.

Thanks Painman...I was just searching the web and basically they all say the same thing, unless you have a really low-end unit.

I think I'll just lap the q tomorrow after another set of Prime runs tonight...looks like momma's mirror is coming down again...she is gonna be pissed.

Grab it while she's sleeping... just make sure you don't leave any metallic powder residue 😉

Good luck with the project. LGA775 is pretty easy to lap... no pins to worry about.

Actually, this is incorrect. Depending on the block, many come bowed to exert extra pressure on the center of the die.

I wouldn't lap a waterblock. I wouldn't want to run the risk of accidentally sanding through the bottom of the block.

That was my main reason for asking this question. I've lapped many chips and sinks before, but a water block...that scares me...one little stress crack and out flows the ooze.

tell me what block it is, and i'll tell ya if its okey to lap it or not.
