forgive my ignorance but for $30 more you could get the real A8N SLI board

I had it, but got rid of my 2 6800 Gts. I just got buyers remorse and couldnt get over spending so much on video cards. The asus board has given me nothing but trouble. I am going to RMA the A8N and possibly sell it on ebay when it comes back.

I was about to jump on the deal
but with Nvidia killing the poor man's SLI on ultras that will give me a useless x16 PCI-E slot that could have been used as a regular PCI slot
I will DFI but payinbg extra for features that I cannot use is not cool

If you dont need SLI then i would suggest the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. It has more features then the DFI Ultra-D board and the MSI nForce 4 boards are overclocking about as well as the DFI boards.

Care to point out those features? I was comparing the specs over at NewEgg just this moment and I see no extra features that you're referring to.

The Neo4 has 8 SATA ports, 1 x16 slot, 1 x4 slot, 1 x1 slot and 4 PCI slots for a total of 7 expansion slots.

The DFI Ultra-D has 4 SATA ports, 2 x16 slots, 1 x4, 1 x1, and 2 PCI slots for a total of 6 expansion slots

Their both great boards and it just depends on what you need out of the motherboard.

MSI also has a great online forum to find out all kinds of info about your motherboard and share tips with lots of other users of the same board.

Those I know about but the only thing I would count as "extra features" are the amount of sata ports on the msi board. 4 should be more than enough though. I don't see the need for 8 ports unless you're running a server that needs RAID 5. I highly doubt a normal user would go out and buy 3 harddrives to setup that. And yeah, less PCI slots but most of the stuff that would normally occupy pci slots are already built in to both boards. I don't use any on my current Asus A78NX.

Alot of people have three or four hard drives in systems today, especially if they have 2 or more in a RAID array. Optical drives will also be slowly moving to SATA. There are already a couple of expensive SATA DVD burners now.

A lot of people still have PATA hard drives as well. 4 and 4 is a good balance for me, and probably for most (as up until now it was rare to have the option of more than 4 drives, unless there was an aditional raid controller that offered 2 more connections for 4 more drives). I'll probably make sure my next motherboard has more than 4 SATA ports, but for now I figure room enough for 6 hard drives is enough for me, considering I've got 2 ROM drives. Should I expand beyond that I could always get an expansion card, as well as a larger case because most don't have room for more than 6. I seriously doubt the average user or even the majority of enthusiast will need more than 4 SATA ports in the near future.

Had some problems with the DFI Ultra-D, it wouldnt properly detect my Gigabyte 6600 until I downloaded the latest Chipset drivers and installed them. However upon installing them the machine wouldnt boot with the 6600 in the system. Had to use a PCI Radeon to finish the chipset install, then re-install the 6600.

Oh, BTW, the board does have 1 com port, just below the 2nd x16 PCIE slot. You'll have to supply your own external cable for it though.

Geeze, am I the onyl one around here who runs with just 1 HDD anymore? I guess the technology is just flying by me.

Me too, but recently I just bought a raptor just for my games and OS. I got tired of having to back up all my pictures/media everytime i wanted to reformat.

This is in the hot deals forum, where there are regularly good deals on hard drive, I'm sure there are several members who have jumped on deal after deal as there's rarely a week where there isn't a good deal on a hard drive. Granted its mostly about self restraint and asking yourself whether or not you really need so much space.

I will be running 1 hard drive in my next build, but I will buy a raptor when they drop in price or if I find a good deal, no rush for me at all.
