I'm planning my first LAN Party and will follow-up with a post and post at lanpart.com. I think I have most of the things covered like Hub, power, location, etc. but I don't know how to setup all the game servers on my LAN Server. I'm looking for some direction. Please feel free to post links or comments.

{SNA}'s Lan Party
October 13th 2002 - 10AM to 10PM
Sleep Inn Pittsburgh, PA
No Agenda yet!

Here are the games so far:
RTCW - I can handle setting this up!
UT - ?
Medial of Honor - ?
Command and Conquer - ?

Thanks All!

Unreal Tournament is easy. Just install the game & patch it, etc. on your game server.
Open the game, go to Multiplayer -> Start New Multiplayer Game
Don't add any bots, blah blah.
Instead of clicking start, click dedicated.

You can also download a free "server-only" version of UT, that basically is just the server. I prefer to install the game myself so that it's easier (for me anyways) to add maps, etc.

You can find most of the files you need, here

I really can't help you with C&C (uggh, why not play War3 or StarCraft) or MOHAA.

joinT,

Thanks for the UT tips. Any place I can go to get a list of preferred maps?

MOHAA is one of the games. War or Starcraft I haven't played for a long time. These are definity great games, but I only have 12hrs. It's my first one and want to play the games I'm familar with. I don't even own WarcraftIII. Is there a demo I could download?

C&C was a game that I use to play before I was consumed by UT. I haven't played it in awhile and it might be replaced (lanparty) with UT2003 if it's out by then...hehe!

Thanks again for the info.

How to set up a MOHAA Server.

There is no such thing as a dedicated C&C server AFAIK. You have to have one player host the game and the rest connect to it.

edit: fixed link

c & c has had terrible network play every time i have used it at a LAN. use Warcraft III instead. the games are closer and often don't take as long. Plus, it is not hard to set up

Actually, i always have a great time bringing back all the old games at lans. We always bust out at least one old one for old times sake. Like C&C, WarCraft 1 or 2, Total Annihilation, Doom 2, Duke3D, etc. Can't go wrong with the classics :)

Cool! I never thought to bring DoomII..Awesome. Yea I might just keep C&C for me and a couple guys to play first thing or after everyone leaves.

I never been or had one before. Can you tell me the the little or most import things I might forget about? For example; a backup hub or nic!

What do you mean the hub is bad? :Q

Make sure you have plenty chairs, tables, surge protectors, power cables, extention cords, patch cables, food, drinks, headphones (a must for everyone). oh yeah, have CD's of your operating systems handy. someone always has to rebuild their box at lans for some reason :) also for networking components for those that have never set it up before.

who said a hub is bad? It's not bad, but if you could get a switch it would be better. how many people/computers are going to be there? make sure you have enough data ports.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll post again if I think of anything.

Also, C&C (and most older games) use IPX for LAN play rather than TCP/IP. So you might want to get the players to install it beforehand.

Sorry warsong. I didn't mean that a hub is bad. I was speaking metaphorically. Like when you only have one hub running everyone and it goes bad...eek!

I think I could support up to 20 people including me. I'm trying to get my hands on 2 24 port hubs or something like that.

Also I was thinking of having the tables setup like a circle or octigon so the hubs/switches, server, etc. will be in the middle providing a short distance for everyones lan cable. Also everyone can see just about everyone. How's this sound?

Anyone interested or know some close that would like to come?
