Lane splitting on a motorcycle is controversial. Should you? Shouldn't you? Is it dangerous? (protip: yes).

Lane splitting is illegal in AZ, but I have ridden enough to CA to be familiar. Have I done it? YEP! Was it scary? YEP! But awesome at the same time.

What is lane splitting? While riding, you travel in between lines of cars. There are generally laws regarding this, such as average MPH has to be below 25MPH.

So have you done it?

No. I've never owned a motorcycle. That said, motorcyclists who do so annoy me; particularly when they go in and out of my blind spot.

they do it but with cars in the DR, they will pass you on the left or the right, with cars coming or not, it's amazing how much room a 2 lane road actually has

Arizona recently legalized the practice. Riders are giving it a try and are going to die.
here's my thought - deaths will spike at first, because cars aren't used to motorcycles lane splitting. then, eventually they will go down to below previous levels. but i expect it to take a few years.

i really enjoyed lane splitting in CA. i got rear-ended by a driver while i was sitting in normal traffic while living in TX, instead of being at the front of the pack at the traffic light.

purely anecdotal, of course, but statistics also point to lane splitting being safer overall IIRC.

Done it a hundred times. Don't enjoy it because it's stressful, but sitting in traffic breathing exhaust and cooking is worse,

this is why you don't get out of a cylist's way - you figure they can swerve around you if need be ;)

I have never driven a motorcycle before but I'd be too scared to do it because the drivers in the DMV area suck bad.

I don't mind if people do it at stop lights though. That doesn't bother me at all but makes some people rage hard.

It may not be legal in Connecticut but unless you're weaving traffic on 95 at 100+ mph you usually won't get cited for it. (along with multiple other "unsafe" looking to cage-driver moves)

Cops don't enjoy scraping up bikers who were just waiting to turn left or coming to a full stop ... and they have to all the time!

Once you're on a bike for a while, MOST riders who survive learn that you need to assume you are at BEST invisible. (and some folks will try to fvck with you)

The easiest way to die in a hurry on a bike in traffic is to follow all the rules of the road.

Loved it when I lived in California.
Cut my commute in half and parking at work was $10/month vs $200 for a car. Plus I parked across the street instead of a couple of blocks away.

Zipping in and out of traffic is / should be a charge of reckless driving.

It's pretty obvious which posters have no experience riding a motorcycle on the road IRL lol. :tearsofjoy:

Everyone STARTS OUT on a bike following the rules made for armored passenger-tanks ... and then one of three things happens:

(1) They get the living $hit scared out of them by somebody in a car and sell the bike immediately at a huge loss. (watch for these "deals" in late summer)

(2) They get mangled or killed on the bike by somebody in a car. (aka: human speed-bumps)

(3) They drastically alter the way they ride to comply more with the reality of driving in the US. (ie: Anarchy Road)
