Here are some comments on this posted on the San Diego Sportbike Meetup group.

-This is the kind of Bullshit that gives bikers a bad rap in the public eye.

-Hey not all riders are wreckless punks, I ride every chance I get. But if I was driving the suv a lot more of them would of been hurt or dead. Just sayin.

-I have been riding since the '70's, Dirt, Street, Quads, Touring, Cruisers, Bobbers, pretty much all of it Currently ride a Harley! These people have developed Mob Mentality, The Bike has nothing to do with it! The Bike are just the tool they use to exercise their stupidity!

Even if he is not charged, his life is forfeited. Biker gang are not known to be the forgiving type and he just ran over a few bike trying to get away.

I've seen these cowards several times while at work- they blew by all the red lights, didn't give a damn about pedestrians and generally didn't give a fuck. If they all died in one giant clusterfuck, smeared into human hamburger on the road, then all the better.
 
The motorcyclists in this incident are giving other motorcyclists a bad name; what would possess a biker to break-check an SUV? That's just pure stupid; and instead of settling matters peacefully they start banging on his window?

At that point they were just begging to be run over. Really really stupid and the guy who initiated the entire thing by cutting off and then break checking needs to get his ass thrown in jail for this.
 
I hate the SUV driver and think he should be locked up. He had a perfect excuse to run over at least 100 lowlife pieces of shit and he allowed them to live. What's the point of having a vehicle that can run over a scooter like it's a speed bump if you don't run over scooters like they're speed bumps?

Many cyclists in my area (the self proclaimed bicycle capitol of washington) are accidents waiting to happen. Many will ride the right side of the road, but then act like pedestrians thinking that while the light is red, the crosswalk says walk - so they go. So a car turning right thinks "crosswalk clear, I can go" when suddenly a bicycle comes careening down the right side of the road IN THEIR BLIND SPOT and runs into the car as it is turning. It's happened more than once, and I've watched it nearly happen a few times. Bicycles aren't legal on sidewalks, yet that's NEVER enforced.

There are some very sane bicyclists in the area, but they're totally eclipsed by ones who ride in the middle of the road instead of the shoulder, and ones who can't decide if they're a pedestrian or a road vehicle. I suggest bicyclists ride on the road, and behave like a bicycle should. You're not a pedestrian. You're much smaller than a car, and should include that in your decisions. It's hard enough checking blind spots for motorcycles, let alone bicycles.

The underlying issues are fundamental lapses and flaws in road education and bicycle infrastructure in the United States. Drivers need to be educated and aware of the fact that cyclists share the road with them (and are legally entitled to fully use the road-yes, that means riding in the middle of lanes). Cyclists also need to be educated about how to ride on the road responsibly without majorly disrupting the flow of traffic or setting themselves up for an accident.

The most common traffic situations that result in bicycle accidents are the right hook (like you described), left cross, and the door zone. The risk for all of these types of accidents can be greatly reduced if a cyclist is assertive and uses their entire lane (as opposed to riding in the shoulder). Why? First of all, the shoulder is a substandard road surface that is usually filled with all the debris swept off the traffic lanes. For skinny bicycle tires inflated to 110psi, riding over debris on the shoulder is a sure way to pick up a puncture. Bicycle lanes in the US are also usually substandard-an afterthought, nothing more than some painted lines along the side of the road. Many bike lanes also travel directly through the deadly "door zone", the area between parked cars on the side of the road and the bicycle lane. I'm sure you can imagine the consequences of having a door suddenly opened directly in your path while travelling at 20+ mph.

A cyclist riding in the middle of the lane (on a 2+ lane road) not only eliminates the possibility of getting caught in the door zone, they also significantly increase their visibility to motorists. This gives motorists much more time to spot cyclists and change lanes well in advance in order to make a safe pass. All too often, if a cyclist rides towards the edge of a lane, motorists will be tempted to make a pass in the same lane. This often results in very close calls and unsafe passes, or worse-the cyclist is hit directly from behind or side swiped. Riding in the middle of the lane also prevents cyclists from getting caught in the blind spots of drivers. A cyclist riding on the side of the road/hugging the curb drastically reduces their visibility, as they are now hidden behind passing cars in the rightmost lane. This introduces the possibility for a driver to suddenly and unsuspectingly come across a cyclist without leaving enough time to set up a safe pass.

I think cyclists need to be seriously educated about how to function on public roads. They should act like normal traffic in most situations-obey stop signs and signals, queue in traffic (instead of splitting the lanes towards the front), etc. They should also be assertive and use clear hand signals in order to display their intentions to motorists around them. They should use their entire lane whenever necessary, and let cars pass if traffic starts to get held up behind them. They should scout their routes in advance, and avoid potentially dangerous and/or high speed roads that might not leave them enough space to share with cars.

Motorists also need to be educated about responsibly sharing the road with cyclists. While they sit comfortably behind their 2 ton+ metal cages (which have the potential to be extremely deadly weapons), cyclists are completely exposed, save for a bit of plastic and foam on their heads. Motorists need to realize this, and give cyclists more than enough space while maneuvering around them. They need to realize that most cyclists also own motor vehicles (and also pay the mythical "road tax"), and they have every right to be on the road as a motor vehicle. Bicycles were around using the roads long before cars were even invented. Bicycles do not tear up the roads and cause the need for constant repairs, nor do they create any emissions and pollute the environment like cars do. A common misconception is that cyclists impede traffic. However, imagine if every cyclist in your city decided to suddenly give up cycling and drove their cars instead, all at the same time-how much more traffic would that cause?

Overall, there should be a mutual amount of respect from both parties. Is that really too much to ask? 😕
