The beauty of boost! At 21% drivetrain loss, that puts it at 373awhp. My MR2 put down 372whp before we max'd out the fuel pump, so it's certainly possible even with 20+yo engine technology. Just force that air in there. :awe:

It's not too uncommon to see (reliable) turbo'd Honda K20's putting out that kind of HP, but I'm shocked to see that much power density coming from the factory.

As outdated and outclassed the Lancer is these days, this would probably be a hoot to drive.

About two years ago Mitsubishi worked with the guys at Forced Performance to design and manufacture an upgraded factory turbo (link below). FP was the US distributor but the turbo was made by MHI (Mitsu Heavy Industries). They originally rated them at 450hp (crank rating). I have one in the basement from a group buy that I have yet to install on my X. With supporting mods, people are getting right around 380-400 awhp with them depending on the dyno (on 93). Actual crank rating would be somewhere in the 500 hp range based on the dyno testing that I've seen.

http://store.forcedperformance.net/PROD/49S36-07000.html

The article says that the car in question uses an HKS turbo, which doesn't make 100% sense to me as they have an in house turbo that could do the job. That being said, this is not the first time I read the same information (several times actually). I'll be interested to see what they end up coming up with.

In the end - they could put out these numbers on the 4B11t from the factory if they want to. Not sure statistically how reliable they would be... but the engines have proved to be pretty reliable with aftermarket turbos in that size range as long as you don't tune them for too much low end torque (and throw rods through the block). 380-400 awhp (with say 340 ish awtq) is pretty much what you get on an Evo X with a 3" exhaust, larger injectors / upgraded fuel pump, intake / panel filter, and the smaller upgraded stock frame turbos. Factory turbo flow rate is something like 37 lb/min and that MHI is 55ish lb/min (there are several stock frame turbos in this range that can do the job). Note that the 4b11t was a new design in 2008.

As an Evo X owner... I don't see them doing anything special for the US market. If anything, it'll get a slight HP boost and some stupid bodykit maybe... and no recaros... because Mitsu can't do anything right. It'll go out with a whimper... not a bang.

Looks like they want to put an end to the sti/evo debate once and for all. Looks pretty good imo.

Is it an end to the debate if one is still made and the other isn't?

Subaru could make an engine with 500hp if they wanted to. Anyone can but clearly the economics dictate it's a bad idea.

iirc AMS had an evo x with 500hp, stock internals, and doing time attacks and racing with it. This was 2009.

Power level is not really new to me. Getting one from the dealership with a warranty is...lol

They had a 400 HP version of the Evo in Europe for a while, didn't they? I recall Top Gear driving it and saying the turbo lag and understeer on-boost made it very unsatisfying to drive.

Yeah - that would be the FQ400 (I believe there is also going to be an FQ440 for this year). The X will do 400 crank with the stock turbo on 93. Basic bolt on parts... that's it... no cams or turbo required.

How can you get that much HP out of a 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder!?!?!?!

In the late 80s GM made the Oldsmobile Aerotech which had a 2.0L 4 cylinder that made ~900hp with a single turbo and ~1000hp with two.

https://history.gmheritagecenter.com/wiki/index.php/Oldsmobile_Aerotech

The Aerotech I was driven by three-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt to a world closed-course speed record of 257.123 mph on August 26, 1987 at the 7.712-mile test track near Fort Stockton, Texas. Prior to this, on August 26, 1987, the car had posted a top speed over a "Flying Mile" of 267.88 mph. Foyt hit straightaway speeds of 290+ mph, yet never used all the available horsepower. The car consisted of a March Indycar single seat chassis enclosed in an extremely efficient aerodynamic carbon fiber body shell. It was powered by a turbo-charged version of the 2-litre Oldsmobile Quad 4 engine. There were two versions of the Quad Four. The ST "RE" unit, prepared by Batten Heads of Detroit, used a single turbocharger to make an estimated 900 horsepower. The LT "BE" powerplant, built by Fuel Engineering of California, used twin turbos to produce an estimated 1000 horsepower.

My mom bought a Lancer ES today and I was at the Mitsu dealership with her, they had an Evo Final Edition in the showroom - what a beast! Understated styling, tons of power, they wouldn't even start it for me.

$59,700 sticker. +$15,000 for "Market adjustment"! Holy hell.

Oops, didn't realize this was from 2015. Just did a search for Lancer.

$60k for an Evo? Yeah, unless it's got 400hp from the factory I don't think so. They're awesome cars but that price is ridiculous.

There's a guy on the Focus ST forums who has more than doubled his HP output from 252 bhp to 514 whp. They stayed with the 2.0L displacement but obviously bumped the turbo.

Suckers... The US Final Edition is only 303/305. We didn't get the fun ones like overseas. It's all badging. They also removed the Recaros a year ago.

you pay for chassis + suspension + brakes + steering; not just for the engine.

Right, but is that $60k Evo really worth $20k more than an STI? Yes yes, final edition blah blah.

Still overpriced... You can get a new Mustang GT or Camaro SS for a lot less, and have $ difference for mods.

apples to oranges. as an import guy and an evo fan I am not cross shopping an evo with a camaro or mustang.
