The 1999 Tour was supposed to be one of renewal after a doping scandal engulfed the 1998 race. Instead, Armstrong won his first of his seven Tours by using the prohibited blood-boosting agent EPO and the steroid hormone testosterone, according to a 200-page report released Wednesday by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

While Armstrong has long protested his innocence, retroactive testing found EPO in six of Armstrong’s urine samples from the 1999 race, according to the report. In addition, the report said, five fellow riders on Armstrong’s 1999 United States Postal Service team — George Hincapie, Frankie Andreu, Tyler Hamilton, Jonathan Vaughters and Christian Vande Velde — provided affidavits testifying to firsthand knowledge that Armstrong violated antidoping rules, the report said.

Now the doubters who still believe in Santa Clause, the Tooth Fairy, and a clean Lance Armstrong can now shut up.

The report is long, but the coverup by UCI is fascinating.

Can we stop calling it a witch hunt now?

^^^ This. I guess it's really hard for those for whom Lance was, understandably, a hero and even a role model to let go of all that, but the evidence is absolutely overwhelming that not only did he dope up and continually lie about it, he was also the ringleader and "take yer dope" enforcer of a very well organized cheater's cabal.

Now if only we'd been able to formally nail the obvious, big-headed cheater Roger Clemens, too.

The arrogance of both of these jamokes has been beyond the pail. Eff 'em both. :colbert:

Why wasn't this treated in the same manner as any other investigation? The problem is that they sat on the evidence rather than making it available. For years. This gave the impression that the investigation was a witch hunt: they constantly defamed him, he would call for them to present the evidence, they wouldn't. Rinse and repeat year after year. In any other area*, an investigation collects evidence and charges an individual when the collected evidence is deemed sufficient to secure a conviction. Disparaging someone in the media is not an appropriate avenue for those seeking justice. In the end, screw Armstrong for cheating but, while you're at it, screw the investigators for acting inappropriately the whole way home.

*Except in Guantanamo - another epic failure of American "justice"

Where and how was he defamed by the investigators?

To care that he was caught doping would only be relevant if anyone cared that he won when they thought it was legit. I am pretty sure people cared more that he dumped his woman after she stuck by him through cancer than they cared about him winning the tour de france.

This is semantic but I think the fact that they successfully caught a witch and were able to come up with proof that he's a witch doesn't negate the fact that this was a witch hunt :)

It wasn't a witch hunt, Lance tried to destroy anyone who stepped forward. I think this part of the story makes lance look even worse than his cheating:

It's astonishing that there are still some people who refuse to accept the truth. Not only was the guy a doper, he was the orchestrator and the key driving force in one of the most sophisticated doping programs ever seen in sport.
Knowing this, he spent the last decade villainizing and threatening to destroy the people who wanted to tell the truth. This includes people like Christophe Bassons, a cyclist who spoke out about doping and who Armstrong publicly condemned and helped drive out of the sport.
This includes people like Greg LeMond who questioned the extent of doping in the sport, and who Armstrong set out to destroy by ruining his business.
This also includes people like Emma O'Reilly, Armstrong's masseuse, who admitted that Lance wanted her to cover up syringe marks, and who Lance subsequently demonised in the press as an alcoholic and a prostitute.
This guy is a full-blown sociopath, who has lied constantly for the last ten years and aggressively attacked anyone who actually tried to tell the truth about what was happening in cycling. That he has been able to portray himself otherwise is a credit to the science of public relations and to the power of money.
There are people who have emotionally invested themselves in his story, and no doubt have leapt to his defence without having any idea of what he really is, or what he was doing to protect and perpetuate the outrageous lies he has told. It's hard for these people to reverse their position, but the truth is the truth. Lance Armstrong is a fraud, a bully, and a cheat, even if to some people he may be other things too.

Nobody ever said anything about WATCHING the events in the first place. I'm just there for the food/drinks. Are there food/drinks at the TDF? Other than IV bags that are doped that is.

Well the TDF happens in F so if you can't find good food and drink then that's more a fail on your part. :D
