That's to close for comfort. My 62yo buddy gained 80# in 10 years after he quit riding with the LA Wheelmen :(

Good to see a post by Fausto :)

Cyclists get used to eating a LOT while they're training 10-20 hours a week and often forget to stop eating so damn much when they quit riding. Have you seen Eddy Merckx lately? He's huge!

I'm not defending Lance, but if you read his book, Its Not About The Bike you will understand where he is coming from.
He is a tightly focused athlete, world class. Social graces are on a back burner. Plus he is a Texan and was raised in a very low income, single parent household.

Roadies, as a group, tend to come off as pretty arrogant. I'm not sure quite why this is the case, but likely has something to do with how psychological bike racing really is. You have to think "I am the best." in order to dig deep enough to win races.

FWIW- Lance has definitely learned to tone down the rhetoric over the years as he's increasingly in the spotlight. I don't know what he's like in private, but his public persona is much more polished than it used to be.

Oh I agree 100% that roadies are a dif breed :)
Seriously though I do understand that to excel in cycling, running etc you need to have an elitest attitude (as any world-class athlete "has" to have. And I dont directly blame Lance for this.

Some of his comments/metions etc in regards to his family kids etc in the past I have questioned a bit... of course I cant think of one damn instance right now to defend myseld though.

Regardless, I really hope that he does well (again) this year. His accomplishments are mindboggling in an all ready mindboggling sport.

Indurain is still my favorite though... :)

I liked Indurain, but from what I remember, he won his races in the midst of a weaker field, relatively speaking. Add Lance's cancer recovery (and the benefits he has done), and you've got a complete badass on your hands. :D

I really need to start riding more. I miss it. :(

Oh yeah Lance's accomplishments are truly mind boggling factoring the cancer. Indurain was in a weaker field, then again is that to say Wilt Chamberlin was only so great becuase he was surrounded mainly by 6ft white guys? Indurains physical specs were nuts. I forgot all the stats, but his lung capacity, heart rate and size/volume were insane compared to the average "world class" athlete at the time.

Indurain may just hold a more special place in my memory too as I was more into riding then. I like the Europeans too as at least they revel in the sport. Its like if the US wins a World Cup, it would be news here for ~15mins. Anywhere else they revel in it for a lifetime.

Mig had a lung capacity of 8 liters :Q and a resting HR of 28 bpm when he was racing. He's definitely a genetic freak. From what I've read, Lance seems to have some genetic advantages as well in terms of tolerance to lactic acid and a few other areas.

Eh...Americans are too lazy to learn to appreciate a sport like cycling. They just see a bunch of guys pedaling along, get bored, and switch to the football game. I'm amazed they like baseball since it's a relatively slow-moving sport. Oh well.

The 8liters is amazing... but the 28BPM is sickening... thats every 2 secs. Time that. wow.

I think pretty much ANY world class athlete has some genetic freak-a-tude to them. They have to.

Yep. The lowest I've ever seen is about 45bpm, and that was back when I'd just finished college and took a summer off to do nothing but race full-time.

True. At some point, no matter how much or how hard you train, you hit the limit of your genetic potential; some people just have higher limits than others.

Let's just say that the TSA people are not amused by the cucumber-wrapped-in-foil trick these days and leave it at that, shall we? :p

Only since I took your master class in hiding phallic objects. :p
