LAN messenger, Inter office messaging program?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some kinda free/open source LAN messenger which can run on each computer w/ using any kinda outside server(Like MSN, Yahoo, AIM)

I have already looked @ Softros LAN messenger , But its not free

please help...
 
I've heard of people using jabber and irc for internal work communication. Both of these should allow you to set up a server internal to the network, but I don't have any personal experience.

I had a great time with this last week. Setup the boss's wife and our finance manager.

This went on for 20 minutes before one of them finally said they think we have a stalker. 🙂 Very light hearted folk with good sense of humors, no harm done, I swear 😀
