LAN gets dropped

I never think my network is going as fast as it should, so i decided to test the speed!
I setup apache on my extra computer (P1 233, 100mpbs, win98) and transferd 100MB files to my computer (p3 700, 100mpbs, win2k). They would start out going like 22,000kbps then my computer would just drop LAN at random times. At first i thought it was my the win98 box, but it wasn't. My computer keeps dropping LAN, i couldn't access any other computer or anything when it happend, but it still showed connection. I had to disable LAN then reconnect it to get it back each time.

Anybody know why it would do this?

Also, 22,000kbps is the fastest ive ever even gotten over LAN, anybody know what limits that? my HD LED only blinks on like every 5sec when transfering files over network usually (both computers that are transfering). And i can transfer files from one of my HD's to my other HD very fast. So i don't think harddrive is limiting factor..
Also ive tryed transfering with http, ftp, and though windows networking, nothing seems to go past like 8,000kbps, this is first time ive seen 22,000kbps, but still seems too slow.

Oh also I'll add that both computers are using D-link 530 fast eithernet cards, and connected with one D-link DSS-8+ Switch, and cables are fairly short (5ft on one, about 15ft on other)

And i transferd the 100MB files though http, and that was not only as fast as its ever gone, but it only dropps when it goes that fast, normaly when i transfer and it only goes 8mbps it never drops.. But thats too slow

If the switch and nic autonegotiate speed (10 or 100) and duplex (full/half) then make sure both sides are negotiating the correct settings. If not the set the switch port and nics to 100/full.

Are these category 5 patch cables?

wheew thx for somebody replying,
Yes they are cat5, and the switch is full auto, i don't think you can set anything.
and the NIC's are on auto, if i put the NIC on 100mpb/full it goes nuts slow, that tell you anything?

Maybe interrupt problems on your NIC or sucky nic.

Run a continous ping (PING 1.1.1.1 -T), start your download and see if you get any timeouts on the ping when you have problems. If not then it is application related, if it does timeout the i've got no idea unless some kind of broadcast storm is goin on (not really possible in a home network).

Did you network card come with any diagnostic software to tell you what kind of errors your NIC is seeing? Can you see errors on the switch?
FCS
RUNT
CRC
ALIGN

these are some errors to look for. On a switched full duplex connection you should NEVER have any errors.

Try latest drivers for NIC, try using FTP instead of HTTP

hope this helps!

ps 22 Mb/sec is decent for the poor P1 233.
