I name my systems something descriptive. Like Black for the black case, though recently I upgraded black to a different case, it is no longer Black!

Likewise with the computer I call Ohwon, a few years back I sold a old wrist watch I had laying around on Ebay, It was an HP01, got $1300 for it! So in remembrance of the watch and the auction which built 2 computers. I will always have an Ohwon on my network. BTW, first I upgraded the mother board and cpu, then the case, so Ohwon is now a completely different computer (perhaps the floppy drive is the same!)

well, the computer on my network are called

Mjolnir
Mercury
Prometheus
Dad
Dad2

So you can see I have sort of a mythology theme going on, but my dad's too lazy to come up with creative names :)

I do tech support for a software company, often on customers sites, so I've seen a ton of naming schemes for servers. Ive seen:

Trees
Flowers
Elements
Disney Characters
Letter/Number codes
Movies

We are small company, so all of our personal computers are named with employee names, our servers are named after Iron Chef characters. When we were trying to come up with the names, three of us were totally into iron chef. So we have Sakai, Morimoto, Kobe, Fukui-San, etc

I have plenty of computers... let's see...

PB G4 is 'fusion'
Athlon64 box's Linux install is 'wavefront' (as in alias|wavefront, makers of the only software used on there)
Athlon64 box's Win2k install will be 'lager' (have to reinstall)
Sun Ultra Enterprise 3000 is, creatively enough, 'enterprise'. Or 'unknown', depending on whether or not Solaris feels like setting the hostname properly at boot...

I've seen all sorts of naming conventions. Some that come to mind:
The DB servers at a company I know are named 'bambi', 'thumper', etc
The CSDE at U of WA names their servers (Sun machines, of course) 'leo', 'polaris', and so on

I'm setting up a cluster of computers to do some distributed 3d rendering and decided on a naming strategy (other than making it up as I go) - The head node is 'Panthera', and the cluster nodes are 'Tigris', 'Leo', and so on (I'll look up more of the major species subsets if I can afford more than 3 nodes :) )

my WAP's SSID is reason. Homage to the greatest music software ever, Reason 2.5 by Propellerhead Software

The computer I am on now is named "STRESS" because that was the first thing that came to mind after having to format/re-install.

I have Duende as my main machines name (with a number that changes per reinstall, I think it's Duende-III right now), and the other is MPDYWDZN-III - which was the random name my first computer had, with III added on because it's the third other computer I've had.

All my computers are based off of the ships in the space sim Freespace 2. I haven't heard anyone else who uses this scheme...so It's at least semi-original (not like simpsons/southpark type stuff :) )

Tend to name my linux boxes at work after penguin species: emperor, adelie, the laptop is fairy
Clusters are typically fictional characters ... corporate cluster is called fellowship, with various components (not the nodes!) named after tolkien characters. Local clusters are Neuromancer & Wintermute
Home PC varies ... was stooges, now primary is Nero (End of Days), and the lone POS windows box is Judas. Will be giving that one to my soon-to-be-X wife ... don't think I'll bother changing the name :D

Worked in an office that started with the names of the planets ... got to be a PITA when they had to get down to the minor moons. Part of my current office uses famous battles (IwoJima, Bulge, Midway, Belleau, Chosin, ElAlamein, Anzio ... I told them if they named one Guadacanal, I was leaving :D

I name them after dark mythical beings.

Router: Charon
Workstation: Belphegor
Server: Asmodeus
Laptop: Mephisto
PVR: Rumael

My access points are just ap1 and ap2. VMWare instances are given the name of the host with a -VM# suffix, i.e. Belphegor-VM1. The only exception is a Win2K Pro VM named Printsrv, which acts as my print server, and for the moment is also running Setiqueue.

lepton is our domain controller, my dev box is meson, and i have quark as an extra machine, i will probably purchase muon or positron soon
