lan card problem

hi, i have a built in gigabit lan card on my mobo but whenever i plug my network cable in it, i get the message saying that a network cable is unplugged. windows detects it and i installed the latest driver for it. i asked my friend and he said that it might be burned out. could it be the problem?
 
just a suggestion, but have you checked your network cable. I get that error all the time and it is usually a short on one end or the other.
