LAN/Bandwidth Question

Hello,

I know virtually nothing about networking so please be kind. I did a search on "bandwidth" but did not find anything useful.

I just bought a 60GB hard drive and I am debating which of my 2 computers to install it on. I normally run an FTP server on my computer. When people are downloading/uploading, my connection gets really slow. I am currently using cable service from Road Runner through a SMC Barricade 4-port router. I am considering running a dedicated server with my other computer. Would constant downloading/uploading on the dedicated server affect the speed on my main computer (which I use to play internet games)?

So if I get a bandwidth of 100 (arbitrary number), then the bandwidth would be split into 50 for each computer? Or would the computer with more activity get more bandwidth?

>>>So if I get a bandwidth of 100 (arbitrary number), <<<

If computer ?B? does nothing, computer ?A? will be capable to use most of the available Bandwidth.

If computer ?B? is constantly DownLoad/UpLoad files, it will take most of the bandwidth, and computer ?A? Interent connection will be slow.

Too many variable to put solid numbers on this, but it is not 50/50.

However it will function better then your current arrangement.
