Well, St Bernardus is absolutely better than Chimay. I'm not one of those beer drinkers that's all "well the aromatic aroma of this sample teased of citrus and coriander, yet tickled my senses with a bit of chocolate and spice" crap lol, but the Chimay just doesn't have much of a taste to me. I taste a little chocolate, but that's about it.

The St Bernardus was pretty good. I expected the sweet and malty, and that's what I got. Thick, semi fruity too. I polished off two bottles and felt nice 😀

Rochefort is next on my list

Yes, can't go wrong with these either.
I'm looking forward to cracking open one of the Trader Joe Vintage Ales from last winter that's aging in my cellar (which, unless my info is bad, comes from Unibroue).

nakedfrog sighting!? 😱

Those TJ's are decent. I don't like them nearly as much as other suggestions in this thread, but at about $5 for 750 ml, they are good bang for the buck. I've still got one of the 2013 left.

They do indeed come from Unibroue.

I've only had St. Bernardus once, I thought it was great but I was at a specialty belgian bar. If you're ever in claremont, check out Back Abbey, Belgians and Trappistes up the wazoo. I'll try and find St. Bernardus again.

Absolutely. I'll take it any day over Chimay.

Also, if you want something more forgiving on the wallet see if you can find offerings by unibroue.

Their Trois Pistoles is freaking awesome. Or if you really want a treat, get their "Terrible" ale.
I second Unibroue. Trois Pistoles is very good as well.

Also, stateside Ommegang is fantastic and Three Philosophers is similar to Chimay blue with noticeable hints of cherry.

Try the Petrus Aged Red and/or the white. Not exactly the same style but given what you've said you liked I think you might enjoy it. More fruit then malt though, at least for the red.
