Chucky Atkins, not Atkinson...and Chris Mihm is also said to be part of the deal..Fox and Payton make too much, though - the Celts would have to add another player.....

This rumour has been floating around for the past week on on the basketball forums. This deal is pretty crappy for the Lakers. It was originally supposed to be with Marcus Banks a young PG. Oh well there goes all the Lakers expiring contracts and Karl Malone. He said he would go to where GP went. THe Mailman is'nt going to Boston so he'll either retire or join Shaq in Miami.
 
The way Payton played in the playoffs, I guess i'm not all that surprised if this is true. He got outplayed by every PG he went up against (Derrick Martin? Puhleease!). What does surprise me is what they supposedly got for him. Chucky Atkins and another to be named?!?! wtf?

Good deal for the Celtics. They can hope that Payton returns to form by getting out of the triangle offense system in LA. If not, and really is old and washed up, they're not giving up much. I think Payton's problem is a little of both.
 
I'm not sure how much Payton has left in the tank, but to be fair, D.Martin only had one good game against the Lakers..

WEEI is reporting that the Celtics, Lakers, and the NBA are close to finalizing the Gary Payton trade. According to WEEI, the trade could be official within the hour.


The Celtics would receive:
Gary Payton
Rick Fox
Lakers' 2005 First Round Draft Pick
Cash

The Lakers would receive:
Chucky Atkins
Chris Mihm
Marcus Banks
Celtics' 2005 Second Round Draft Pick

Ok maybe Martin didn't do that well, but Payton wasn't exactly taking him to school like a future HOF should against a 2nd string PG they picked up from the CBA.

Yea i'm still bitter the Lakers lost to the Pistons 🙂
 
this actually isn't a bad trade for the lakers. fox and payton are on the downward spiral while the 3 guys the lakers are receiving are relatively young. Banks could be a developing PG which the Lakers truly need.
