I swear these seem like decent games. Especially the latter. I don't know if it's the hype because they have been talking about them for nearly a year or what (as opposed to PS2 games which came out of nowhere and either did well or flopped) but they both have strong production values and they say that HS is shallow, but what hack and slash isn't???

I think thats the point...its not graded against other hack and slashs...but against other games, and simple hack and slash games tend to get repititve easily.

ArsTechnica's Ben Kuchera, GameSpot, the Penny Arcade guys, and so on.

In the Ars GESC forums Lair thread there are a few people who did get the hang of it eventually, and gave it a 7 - 8 out of 10 instead of the reviewers 5 - 6.

and I'd agree. Not the best game in the world even if it did have control sticks, but it stands out. So it may be hard as hell pulling off a 180, but outside of the training area it's not required. If you can manage to fly and survive the skies without it, then who needs it? I like game's that try new things, because well.. the same old things get worn out and boring.

oh, and as far as Heavenly Sword, what reviews are bad? EGM gave it 8, 8, and 9.. 1UP gave it an 8.0.. countless others are right around there, with the average being 80. metacritic

i don't find too much wrong with that. I only fear it'll be too short. Getting it as a birthday gift from my parents though, that'll be good for me. :) Greatest thing, is it comes out on my birthday. It's like a birthday gift from Sony too, just they didn't feel my PS3 investment was good enough for them to actually give me the game.. or the many BD movies I've picked up. Meh, never expected that. I will at least be getting a God of War demo disc (UMD) whenever it comes out. That's nice. :)

Perhaps it's bad because an old game like Drakengard is prefered over Lair by most, including me. I can't comment on HS as I haven't played it, but Lair is complete shit. Lair suffers from the same problem that the PS3 does, it may have nice graphics, but there is no fun gameplay.

I've never played it and I've only read the debates so I personally don't have anything new to add. But as usual, Tycho from PA let loose with my favorite quote on the whole Lair issue:

I would never ask you to take my word over your own experience, though, and you'll certainly find those online who will bolster you in your choice to purchase. There are some who derive a kind of perverse superiority from their mastery of the game's ambiguous mechanics. For my part, I don't give a good G__d___ if someone has trained themselves to eat s___ and like it. The game is not challenging, it's difficult to play, and it's taken many years but I'm ready to begin making this distinction.

Or just watch a blu-ray movie. If visuals matter above all else, why even worry about having to control anything. Just sit back in your recliner and enjoy the blu-ray visuals of your favorite film.

For the rest of us, I don't think we'd be satisfied looking at a visually glorious pile of s**t.

The graphics for Lair can be as pretty as they want to be, the controls are still shit.

no because movies are always the same. And in bad games you still have control to it's still better than any movie.

The worst game ever made is better than the best movie ever made?

have you played the game at all? if not, don't make such blatant statements suggesting that you have. It's not the hardest game ever (barring an idiot not knowing how to tilt a controller a few different directions), but it's definitely not the easiest, at least for me due to my lack of ability to dog fight in the greatest ease. Others who have mastered aerial combat games, sure it'll be cakewalk. Yet does a games difficulty truly determine the games overall quality? I have never judged the character of a specific game based on if it was easy or hard. Maybe some people are overly critical and asinine about those details, but I purchase games to enjoy them. If a game is enjoyable, yet is not exactly challenging, so what.

Granted, not everyone is going to enjoy the same types of games. So for some people, they may genuinely not enjoy Lair, but I enjoy it and that's good enough for me. If I can't convince anyone that the loathing reviews from some reviewers are horrible write ups that someone who introduced a lot of bias or is a noob to motion controls, then so be it. I tried.
In all honesty, sure it's not a game that is deserving of an Editor's Choice award or something, and doesn't necessarily deserve millions upon millions of copies sold, but it's enjoyable.

who said heavenly sword got bad reviews? 7 out of 10 does not a bad game make. lair is supposed to suck because of the poor motion sensor implementation.
