Laid Off! Woo! There goes my April wedding...

Well the company I'm working for laid off a ton of their contractors today after laying off a large percentage of their full-time employees last week. I thought if I made it through the week I'd be fine. They'd been laying off contractors for months already and I had been told I was budgeted for a 2-3 more months with a probability of extending.

I'd say more but I plan on getting paid the next two weeks and keeping my good references here. :)

The fun part is I was supposed to get married in mid April and I was going to be paying for all of it. Well, looks like that's out unless I can get another job in/around Orange County in the next month or so. Combine that with the fact that my fiancee is going through some hard things right now it's going to be a FUN FUN Christmas. :) At least I was smart enough to buy insurance on my Christmas plane tickets and supposedly I'll be able to get a refund since I was laid off. We'll see.

*sigh* Was looking forward to introducing my fiancee to my parents, grandparents, siblings, nieces, nephews and best man.

Ok, I need to stop before my cube-mates see a grown man cry.

Anyone need an Oracle PL/SQL, Sybase, SQL Server, VB/ASP, C/C# developer that specializes in Oracle performance tuning in the Orange County, CA area? :)

Sorry to hear that Zane. Is there no way to have a smaller wedding?

To even get an officiant in SoCal it costs $300 (if you can find it) - $600. $600 is pretty standard. We could do the fly-by-night thing and go to a courthouse and have a judge do it but I'd rather delay 6 months and have a decent wedding. We'd already cut it back to around $3000-4000 total (very cheap for out here) and only 40-50 attendees.

Just after I posted this the contractor next to me was let go as well. Not a happy day around here.

I've been working in IT for around 10 yeaers now and this is the first time I've been laid off or fired. The longest I've ever been unemployed was a week while moving to the next job. Just a bit scary right now, especially with the utter lack of response I've seen from my job searching so far (started looking around a month ago when this started looking more and more probable).

Luckily I have family near by and she does as well.

I'll look into it. We were planning on moving out of CA this summer and I'm not sure if we want to consider moving out of state before the wedding since all her family is here. We'll be talking about that tonight I'm sure. She had mentioned Texas and I do have family and friends there. We were more interested in Tulsa, Missourri or Oklahoma due to my family/friends connections there as well.

Thanks for the heads up.

Why have a bad Crhistmas? Remember, first of all, that tons and tons of people are out there looking for the happiness you have with your fiance. Second, one of the benefits of having a so is that no matter how bad you day was, you always have someone to talk to and someone that will comfort you.

Count your blessings. Good luck though, I'm sure things will work out! :)

Our economy is terrible. I couldn't even get a temp job (labor) at UPS or CostCo storage facilities, and they advertised that they needed holiday help. I've tried for the past 4-6 weeks and nobody is hiring. It's terrible. I'm in college, and I can't even get a temp job. I don't want to know what the normal job market is like.

I feel for ya bro.

My Aunt & Uncle are my only relatives out here and she's met them several times. I've met all of her family out here as well (and then some). My family can't really afford to fly out here just to meet her and that was supposed to happen in a couple of weeks. If I get a job quick it might still, otherwise, *shrug*.

That's how I deal I guess. I'm smiling right now. I can either smile and laugh or cry. Smiling and laughing works better for me and it's not going to help to tear myself up completely over something I can't change. I'm just trying to deal with it. Venting here a bit helps. :)

Actually, the sector this company is in has been doing pretty well lately, it's just that this company is performing quite a bit below the market right now and they're paying for their past mistakes still.

Tulsa is what I was thinking. Lived there for 6 months working for Williams Communications before I moved out here almost 4 years ago for this job. My best man is still living there with his family and a large percentage of my family lives in Springfield, Mo (3 hour drive up I-44).

Springfield, Mo would be ideal but the job market there is terrible. It's a very nice place to live with no major companies there. It's mostly colleges and medical care there. Gonna be fun teaching the fiancee to drive in the snow. :)

You can always get into the pr0n industry... they are always hiring and the money is definitely good.
