Depends. Not everyone agrees. I like the Islay malts sometimes, but depends on my mood.
My scotch collection is large enough that I have something for everyone and every mood.

I had a 25 yr blend recently called King's Crest.
Check it out if you've never had it.
Really good.

Current stash:

2 bottles Glenfiddich
1 bottle Glenfiddich 18
4 bottles Glenlivet
1 bottle Glenmorangie
1 bottle Glenrothes
1 huge bottle of Chivas on a swing
1 bottle Balvenie
1 bottle Laphroig
1 bottle Dalwhinnie distillers edition '91

Also got some good bourbons.
Woodford, Pogue, Willet, Basil Haydens, etc

Old style or the new style since LVMH bought it?

My cousin and I really enjoy the old style Glenmorangie 10 year but the new bottles taste like shit. The new style Quinta Ruban is very good, however, but a lot of the old styles trump the new.

I had a pour of Bowmore 30 yr recently at a restaurant. Seemed like an appropriate splurge when the meal was already pretty high up there (both in the bill and in terms of the best meals I've had). Excellent flavor - smooth, a little sweet, I'd buy a bottle of that.

I've never had the 30, but in general, Bowmore is a little more sherried than I'd like in an Islay. I prefer the the peatier whiskys to be dryer.

And how was the company and conversation? Ever notice how the conversation quality often reflects the quality of the meal, drink and atmosphere? Especially true when done on someone else's dime and time. :D

These kind of gatherings are good for the soul.

I always thought that Glenfiddich was overrated. Haven't had the $$ to lay out for the lagavulin. Can get Laphroaig for $30 a fifth here though, tough to beat that.

Excellent on all counts. Dinner was at Hugo's up in Portland, Maine, and we were celebrating my wife's birthday. So far, that's her favorite restaurant in the entire country. If I could pick just one, I'd probably agree.

It was on my dime though :)

No shit? That is a really good deal. It'd be hard to find a better value if you like Islay whiskies.

I just had a pour of Bowmore 12 year tonight and I'd agree. The 30 tastes a little warmer, if that makes any sense. It's not too sweet.

I had a glass of Laphroaig (no idea what variation) at a friend's wedding a few years ago. I was in college at the time and used to rails drinks, so its smoothness was amazing to me. However, it smelled (and people around me commented on it as well) like a burning log :D

EDIT: Can anyone recommend a good set of glasses to buy to serve Scotch in? Something nice to bring out for special occasions...

I like Edinburgh Crystal's Thistle pattern glasses. I actually don't own any, but over the years I've gotten giveaways from Christmas scotch boxes that have similar shaped glasses.

What I like about them, is the rounded bottom is nice for cupping in your hand to warm the whisky. The pinched neck retains fumes, while the flared part allows them to dissipate when smelling. Aside from all those features, they have fuckin' thistles on the side. That's a mans flower; the flower that bites back, and repels children :^D

bourbon, rye, and/or Irish whiskey >> Scotch

yeah I said it.

Mostly agreed. I'd say this is how I rate Whiskey/Whisky around the world:

Japanese whisky > Bourbon > Scotch > Rye > Irish Whiskey

Obviously, each individual malt or blend will have its own flavor profile, and i may like some scotch's or rye's better than Bourbon's or Japanese Malts.

If you've never had any Japanese Whiskey, get some now! Yamaziki 12 is the easiest to find in the states, and its around $40 a bottle.

I don't know. I guess it's the new one. Kind of a light, airy slightly sweet scotch. Not too bad.

here's my order of preference...

Scotch=Irish I liked them both equally depending on mood. The difference between them is like the difference in Scotch regions.

Good tequila - I can't drink the cheap stuff, but good tequila's sublime

Bourbon - As above, I generally can't drink the cheap stuff, but there's a couple lower priced brands I enjoy. I can't drink a lot of it. It doesn't sit well on my stomach.

Rye - Don't drink much of this. It's nice as an occasional one off, but not a favorite.

Tennessee whiskey - Don't like it

Canadian whiskey - Don't like it

I think that's a good call and I would throw The Glenlivet 15 year French Oak into that same category.

This is one of my fave's for sure.

Just bought my first Lagavulin the other week. my first sip I was like "whoa, grosss, this is not at all what I was expecting. Too smoking and deep,"
But then the second glass I had a few days later, and it really grew on me. I like it now. Will be the next bottle I buy.

Glenlivet 15 year is what I buy my friends for birthdyas and weddings.

The old stuff is labeled as "10 year" while the new stuff is labeled as "The Original."

The new stuff still has the light and sweet characteristics but the old style is remarkably complex for a young whisky. If you like the new style I'd highly recommend picking up a bottle of the old style if you come across it.
