Lag Time When Opening Directories from File Explorer in XP

I just put together a new computer with a Q6600 processor in Win XP Pro and the lag times are sometimes several seconds when I go into file explorer and try to access my drives. They are all internal SATA drives. I have two drives in the computer right now. What effects this lag time before file explorer will let you access your disks? I have alot of stuff that needs to run on this computer at once and that I why I went to a quad core. I exited all the software I was running and I am still gettting lags. I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and Trueimage 11 and there was no improvement. Other machines that I have that are slower than this one are 10 times faster when I try to access a directory or folder. I know that if you have something in the CD that sometimes it has to spool up before it will let you access it but why are all my Hard drives slow?
