Lag that should not be happening

I am having lag issues with my computer, the one below. I first noticed it on CoD4 and went to CS:S to see if it lagged in there as well. Obviously i should be able to play without any lag on CS:S but for some reason I have lag. I have installed every driver update, tried various video card drives including beta ones and can not seem to find a cure. Any help is appreciated.

amd 64 x2 4600+
asus m2n-mx se plus
2 gigs corsair xms2 ddr2800 pc6400c4
evga 7900gtx
my internet is at 3000k but is not the problem because i also lag in sp on CoD4

Also, I used to run smooth until i upgraded my mobo to am2, so naturally i had to upgrade my RAM and CPU.

ram used to be corsair xms ddr400
CPU used to be amd 64 4000+
mobo used to be asus a8n32 sli deluxe

again any help is appreciated.

i know my grammar is bad so any trouble just ask

What exactly do you mean when you say you have "lag"? When you click the mouse button or press a keyboard button does the game not immediately respond, or are you getting low frame rates? Or something else?

sorry, low frame rates. I will get 60-80 fps if i'm not lagging, but when i lag ill get from 1-15. I also often get a consistent 25 fps for about a minute. I did a little searching and some people have said it was windows finding a better connection, but my wireless has it's own driver and would not be happening in single player if that was the fact.

did you reformat when you installed your new parts? You need to reformat for the new drivers. Something like that may be causing the lag. Or possibly you have some over used AV like Nortan or McAffee. I use Eset Smart Security. its pretty bad ass and it takes like no resources.

I formatted because the new bios was not set for the raid 0 i had on it so it would not load up windows. I also use driver cleaner when installing and updating my drivers as to get rid of my old drivers remnants. I don't believe i have an AV because i don't see one in the task bar nor in the processes in task manager. I use Windows live one care but as i said i don't have it installed yet.

Make sure that you download and install the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer software. Install it and reboot your pc.

Let us know how it works. 🙂

i have that aswell as the amd dual-core driver

i ran pcpitstop and it said everythign was a winner except for internet(becuase i have auto-passwords on), and windows(because i havnt installed my AV yet.

Could it be a BIOS problem i have 0209 version but 0302 is out. I do not want to upgrade my BIOS and risk my mobo unless it is a possibility as i have tried EVERYTHING else

Are you getting this issue in COD4 single player? If not then you can ignore all this about processors and graphics cards.

'Lag' usually refers to network issues.

yeah i think i said that in my reply to Fardringle it is also occurring in HL2: LC so it's not just a cod4 problem. i have videos of me playing if you guys want to see some of the lag i don't think that's going to help diagnose it though. I have ran full virus scans by multiple companies including AVG, VCleaner, hijackthis, superantispyware and a few others and have come up with nothing so it's not a viral problem. All the processes showing up in my task manager are all necessary or known.

I think it's a RAM issue maybe. My RAM is rated at 4-4-4-12 but is running at 5-5-5-18 says CPU-Z.

I can't figure out how to overclock the ram because this mobo is a low-end one and does not have many features.

cmon guys i really want to got back to playing games with out lag i am willing to entertain any idea ...except for sell and buy a new one.

RAM freq is 400(401.9)MHz i don't know what any of that is

EDIT Multiplier is x12 and i dont know where my FSB settings i used CPU-z to find my multiplier

heres a pic of CPU-Z

Your FSB (front side bus) is 200Mhz - 'bus speed' in CPU-Z.

IMO this could be one of two things:

1 - The periods of low frame rates are caused by loading data from the hard disk, either because the hard disk is too slow/broken, or because the memory is too slow/there is not enough memory.

2 - The periods of low frame rates are caused by the card or processor throttling due to overheating.

Does it occur at random? How long does it last? do you have any games in which it does *not* happen? Are you absolutely sure of temp readings on the card?

I am 100% sure of the temp readings the gpu diode is the only one that ever gets hot and i havn't seen it pass 60. The CPU hasn't passed 60 either (core 1). It occurs at random and can last from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The frame rates also change from 30-1(when not lagging about 60). It happens in every game i just started up lost coast and it was practically unplayable. The HDD is rated 7200 RPM. i have dual HDDs if i switch the game over to the other one and it runs fine it would be a hdd problem right? There obviously is enough memory with 2 gigs i had the feelign my memory was slow since it's 5-5-5-18 but is rated for 4-4-4-12.

Still smells a lot like automatic throttling. Maybe its doing it mistakenly, even though you are not overheating, which would indicate bad hardware. Or maybe you have bad hardware and *are* over heating but getting a wrong reading.

Why not try running a couple of stress test programs and watching cpu-z or something. You should be able to see if the machine throttles.

Yea you might try that, or a drive diagnostic, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Might as well run memtest while you're at it. Those timings mean very little though - its Mhz that matter with modern memory.

so what programs would you recommend?

i use everest ultimate for temps so i'm pretty sure they're right. inless it's a sensor problem

everest has a stress test but how do i know if somethign is worng?

Prime95 will test your CPUs. If they are unstable it will fail, or if it's throttling the Mhz will go down in CPU-z.

You'll have to google something for your card. I used to use ATItool's overclocking feature when I had ATI cards - it runs a simple 3D thing and detects artifacts while slowly increasing the clock speed.
