Am I out of touch? Am I too angry, too outraged about Manny Ramirez and his dope-induced exile to baseball purgatory?

In the last few days, talking to fans during Dodgers games and perusing my e-mail inbox, it's been striking how many people feel that angry indignation is uncouth, unrealistic and absurd. Striking how many are willing to treat their favorite player as if he's just gone off on a nice holiday. All will be forgiven, as long as No. 99 comes back swinging a fat bat...

I don't really see how people can get mad at the players at this point. The reason they cheer for Manny is because he's awesome. Apparently the reason he's awesome is because he's on PEDs. Take away the PEDs and he's probably an average player no one would have heard of. Risk/reward.

I'd get tested positive for PED's then. I'm on clomid because we're trying to get pregnant and it's been linked to boosting sperm count in men. If thats all they've got then yes, its suspect but come on, don't hang the guy just yet...

It's funny that you mention that. I was listening to a local sports talk radio show yesterday and they started talking about the hypocrisy of it all. One of the guys even said he is one of the biggest hypocrites of the bunch. He's pissed/angry/sick/etc. when it comes to baseball yet when he goes to California next week he is going to an Angels game, Padres game, and a Dodgers game. Voting with your wallet pretty much negates whatever comes out of your mouth.

Well, you're also not a home run hitter who fits the profile of someone who could be considered a steroid user. Face it, anyone who is a huge dude in the 'Steroid Era' is a target. (Or, if you believe Canseco, everyone is a target 😛)

You probably also weren't handed a specific list of substances not to take or risk losing your job. I have a feeling you would scrutinize everything you put in your body and at least ask for a medical waiver prior to doing so if you knew you would lose your job for taking the substance otherwise.

Exactly. I have zero sympathy for these morons, there's a list of what you can't put in your body. How hard is it to follow these rules? In Manny's case, he can't even claim he didn't know since he has a prescription for this stuff.

Personally, I think there is a lack of outrage over Manny because the whole PED thing has become old hat by now. We can get outrage over the 1st player caught. Maybe even the 10th player caught. But Manny is so far down the list of players that have been busted that it's just kind of...meh...whatever.

Honestly, the steroids thing has been way overblown. As a Giants fan the only part I've enjoyed is watching my friends in LA eat their hats over the grief they gave me about bonds. I'm not even giving them grief about manny cause ... i don't really care.

At this point - no one would surprise me as a steroid user, but I also don't see it really ruining 'the sanctity' or 'innocence' of the game. I just think it was dumb of manny to continue using steroids since there is huge scrutiny on baseball players over it now.

When did I say otherwise? However, if you read one of the latest stories on ESPN (sorry, no link on hand) you'll see his lawyers were about to claim his elevated testosterone levels were due to a legal drug, until his prescription was found.

I agree that the whole "sanctitity" and "innocence of the game" stuff is nonsense. The bad part about steroids is how it shifts the balance of power in the game between those that are willing to pump their bodies full of drugs and those that aren't, especially when there is, potentially, a lot of money at stake to do so.

Go read the story on ESPN.com. He was appealing it. The problem was that MLB then had the right to all of his medical records and they turned up ANOTHER banned substance he was prescribed by doctors. Different from what he tested postive for. So he dropped the appeal because he's screwed 🙂
