Lab partner not responding to communication

Leros

Lifer
Agh this is frustrating.

We were supposed to do our lab checkout on Thursday, but he was too busy studying for his exam to help finish the lab. So we finished up Thursday night, planning to do late checkout on Friday (15% off). I showed up on Friday and he wasn't there. He has all the equipment so there wasn't anything I could do.

I have called, texted, emailed, etc. I can see him on gmail chat right now and he's not responding. We need to do super late checkout on Monday (40% off :|) and he's not responding at all. He has all the equipment so I can't do it myself.

The professor made a big deal about choosing your partner wisely, so he doesn't have any compassion about this kind of stuff nor does he let us drop or change lab partners.

He's been late for almost every lab meeting and lab checkout. He's skipped every single class. He's a smart guy and very helpful but its a pain in the neck trying to work with him. I think I'm just gonna do the rest of the labs by myself unless he makes the effort to arrange to meet.

I don't care what your professor said at the beginning of the semester, if your partner is really doing all of the things you say he is you need to talk to the professor. You can not let someone else fuck you over like this.

Yeah, if he doesn't show up tomorrow I'm definitely going to talk to the professor.

If I ever have a partner that I don't know well, I just assume that I'll have to do everything (and it has happened a good number of times). It's a good thing to keep in mind in the future. Right now, though, you're basically screwed if the professor doesn't care.

Years from now when you're trapped in a dead end job you hate because you didn't get into grad school due to lousy lab grades you'll laugh that this seemed such a big deal.

I contacted a friend of mine who knows him through an organization. I told her to tell him to contact me. And he IMed me a bit later. So at least we got things arranged for the super late (40% off) checkout.

I'm debating about sending an email to the professor. It really is unfair that I'm losing points because of his unreliability. However, I could've taken the equipment myself and ensured that there wouldn't be a problem. I'm afraid I'll just sound whiny to the professor and he'll tell me I should've taken steps to take care of things myself.

What do you guys think, should I tell the professor and try to get some points back?

I would forget about even bringing him into the fold at this point, it's too late and your grade is suffering because of him.

I would just go straight to the prof and throw him to the wolves.

Probably not the best email, but its what I sent to my professor:

I know you said that partnerships were marriages and I've been dealing with my partner's unreliability and tardiness all semester. However, now it is beginning to affect my grade and that seems unfair.

He did not show up for our late checkout on Friday (he had the equipment). Neither did he complete his portion of the lab report. I tried communicating with him all weekend to no avail, eventually getting another person to tell him to contact me. We just now finally got in touch and he said he was sleeping all day on Friday.

Reasons aside, it just seems unfair to me that I will be getting an additional 25% off my lab grade because of my partner's unreliability. Is there a way that I can avoid getting this additional late penalty on my lab?

Sorry that I've had to contact you about this. I've been trying to deal with this on my own, but he has been getting worse as the semester continues and I don't want this to affect my course grade.

Well, I guess I should be thankful that my engineering project team member is only semi-worthless. At least he doesn't actively hinder us...

Fuck that - why should you have to take a 15% or a 40% penalty for his lateness. This is what you do (probably hard to pull it off) - get your partner to write in writing that its his fault that everything is late. You don't get mark deductions and he does. Good luck though, seems like the best outcome is a 40% cut.

Time to man up to accept being the bitch in real life.

If you are in a Science / Engineering major group labs/projects come with the territory. In your first 'meeting' ground rules should be established. The problem is all the current group of students are too brought up on this 'anything you want to do is fine' bullshit by their parents.

Doesn't scale into the real world.

Set the rules and enforce them as a group, or yourself if they are broken.

The professor told me to bring him to his office so we can discuss.
