Disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has agreed to allow his wife, Shelly, to negotiate a forced sale of the team, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.

Shelly Sterling and her lawyers have been negotiating with the NBA since commissioner Adam Silver banned her husband from the NBA for life on April 29 for making racially charged comments on an audiotape.

Although the league has yet to accept this arrangement, sources said that if she is willing to sell the entire team with terms that are acceptable to the league, this could bring a startlingly quick end to what appeared to be a protracted legal battle.

Otoh:

The Sterlings' sudden willingness to consider a sale of the team could be a tactic to delay the termination of Donald Sterling's ownership. It could be a cynical attempt to entrap the NBA into recognition that Shelly shares ownership with Donald, a complication that the NBA wishes to avoid. Or it could be recognition by the Sterlings of the legal realities of their predicament.

:hmm:

Mark Cuban should be forced to sell his team also, he said some bad things recently.

404 bad things not found

In an on-stage interview for the GrowCo conference in Nashville, the Dallas Mavericks owner said: "If I see a black kid in a hoodie at night ... on the same side of the street, I'm probably going to walk to the other side of the street." He added that he would also cross the street to avoid "a white guy with a shaved head and lots of tattoos."

But, he continued, "Other than safety issues, I try to always catch my prejudices and recognize and be very self-aware that my stream of thought is never perfect and I've got to be careful. To me, that's part of growing up and what I try to instill in my kids."

unless you got some other nuggets.

Might want to look up the definition of prejudice, stereotype and bigotry?? Mark Cuban only partially met the contextual requirements for current non-racist status.

Overt pedantry requires Mark further be interrogated to determine true meaning by a thought crimes council. Get some skid-resistant pants on the ready for the slippery slope.

If Sterling was smart, good PIs are cheap and plentiful. Dig up dirt on every single owner... all kinds of juicy stuff.

I don't think the public sympathy angle is working as well any longer. The owners will probably want this story buried soon, especially if their votes become public. What's good for the goose.....

I dunno, caring for your safety vs not wanting your mistress to bring black people to games is pretty far apart.

It really looks like the Clippers will be sold, so going through anything else is just a waste of time and money. I sure didn't expect it to end in a timely manner, but it looks like it will.

Mebbe he didn't want his girlfriend contracting HIV from Earvin Johnson. Can you prove that he would easily accept HIV indirectly from a white man? Mebbe he wanted to keep his mistress on the down low? First establish equitable ground based in fairness before introducing any semblance of logic?

The franchise value would probably drop if he tried to drag it out, especially if the players sued for free agency. They certainly wouldn't be able to sign any free agents. Not to mention the lawyer costs would be prodigious.

Rumor is they might sell for 1.5B or more.

You may be ok with an owner being racist but most of society is not. You are most definitely the minority here. You can bitch and whine about this being about PC but it most definitely is not. If you fail to understand that this latest speech by Sterling is one of many and many are tired of him then you really don't understand what is going on here and why many are upset.

It is completely irrelevant what people think of him with regard to property he owns. If you fail to see that the right of property ownership is really the crux of the issue then you really don't understand what is going on here and why many are upset.

Well, considering that an organization has a hand in "his" property and said organization is extremely upset at him and he agreed to abide by its rules and regulations and there are other variables at hand, you can see why he'll be forced to sell. FWIW, I don't know of any outrage at DTS being forced to sell.

The value of the team is listed at $575 million, if someone pays 2B, they are nuts.

According to one of the rags here, the racist owner will sell. Too much pressure, I guess, and a weak case on his part (probably advice from his lawyers). I'm sure many racists here will claim outrage and see him as a martyr...

He owns a franchise. Read up on it. Might be enlightening.

Supposedly Ballmer has bid 1.8
http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on...eo-ballmer-puts-in-18-billion-bid-on-clippers

The hang up - DS looks like he wants to lawyer up and go scorched earth (not a surprise), and they want all bidders to put up a 300mil deposit. So, you'd leave 300mil out there while the courts drag it out.

Hope Ballmer gets it and moves them to Seattle!

I think Sterling has multiple lawyers looking at multiple things independently, one looking at the fight against the NBA forcing him to see and another investigating the sale and all of the implications there and maybe another doing something else, who knows. Certainly going down swinging, but who would have expected anything different, particularly considering he was a lawyer by trade.

God I hope he moves them to Seattle. LA already has the Lakers (way more popular than the Clippers) and Supersonics' fans showed for decades that Seattle appreciates basketball. That city deserves a good team. Yes, I realize he said that the $2 billion valuation only makes sense in a media market the size of LA, but he's also worth 10 times that much; he can afford to treat the team as completely disposable rather than as an investment vehicle. Bring back the Sonics!

Ballmer buying the Clippers for $2 Billion: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-sn-clippers-sale-ballmer-20140529-story.html

Previous record NBA franchise sale was $550 million for the Bucks... (and Balmer paid nearly 3.5x more).

Hell yeah!
