The NBA has extended a nice olive branch. There's now a need for black ownership to reclaim this team well below market value or it will be considered the very height of racism.

My recommendation to everyone: if you see something, don't say something, record it. I'm talking your neighbors and family members too, turn them in.

Yup, the NBA and it's commish took the grandstand pleasing solution. At least give the guy the opportunity to apologize and step down himself. Sterling probably doesn't deserve forgiveness, but the other side should always be willing to forgive before laying down the hammer. Now the precedent is set and what stops the owners from doing the same(rush to absolute judgement) to a player in a similar situation (ex. what if another Latrell Sprewell choking his coach type incident occurs)?

is anyone else sad that this dude and the mozilla dude are being crucified for their beliefs instead of us working to change their minds?

I mean I can't say I'm upset over either one when taken at face value, they kind of deserve whats coming to them, but at the same time...where do we draw the line? Why can't humanity take that next step up towards truer civility?

Lots of people in this thread are very dense. This has little to do with his private conversations and more to do with his history of racism. He fully deserves what he gets based on his history. This latest speech from Sterling was the camel that broke that camel's overloaded back.

Oh, a takeaway from this story is to never trust your whores. They are whores, afterall, and should be treated as such.

So my prediction earlier in this thread that someone would try to link this to the Washington Redskins has come to pass but I really thought it would be in the Post's sport section, not the Senate Majority Leader.

Harry Reid Slams Redskins Owner, NFL Over Team’s Name

you underestimate the slime that is american politicians

not that i would keep the name

wondering how much nostalgia is attached to the redskins name

Latest report says they will stop him attending club meeting etc and making decisions on his own club....Im like, WTF, how do they stop someone who owns the club, by rights, he could if he wanted, stop the club cold and no one will get paid sort of thing!

Except when he decided to become an owner, he agreed to abide to the bylaws of the NBA created by the owners.

We don't need no stinkin' time frame. Here's what you said -- quoted in my challenge post to you as well:

So, the time frame is as soon as we find that 5 or more owners voted to kick the lizard king out, or we find out that only 4 or less did. <shrug>

Ah, I'm only willing to bet on whether he's forced to sell the team or not. You're trying to string together two different posts of mine. Besides, we'll never know who voted how, it's all secret.

what if the black guy wasn't magic johnson but say Mike Tyson?
and what if Sterling has said those bigot words in a café nowhere near his stadium?

would there be as much outrage? and would the nba commish punish him as severely?

If it wouldn't have been recorded and put on TV then of course no one would have known.

NOT going to happen. IF he is forced to sell it sure in the hell is not going to go below market value. that's just insane.

It is already rumored due to the number of buyers that bidding will go over $1 billion. Yep, that's below market value. ^_^

SI.com has a great article on the legal analysis. One key point is that capital gains tax is higher than estate tax, so DTS may try to drag this out as long as possible until he croaks.

But as far as a forced fire sale, that would give Sterling grounds to sue the NBA for hefty damages on anti-trust concerns.

If anything, he'll get an inflated value in an "open" auction. Thus, my initial guess was $1.4B but everything I've read suggests $1B or so is about right. Of course, everybody figures the L.A. Dodgers were worth just $1.5B so an auction could get "out of hand" easily when you have billionaire celebrities already jockeying to bid.

You're trying to string together two different posts of mine.

No I'm not! :colbert:

Seems like maybe you got sloppy and confused, but I was specific. Again, here's my challenge post, directly quoting in its entirety your post to which I was, clearly and unambiguously, responding.

I'll link it and re-post it:

I'll bet you money that doesn't happen.

I'm not saying it's not possible, I'm saying only 4 out of 30 owners will support such an action.

Howdy Nebor. Is it a grand day in the Nebor-hood? :)

I'll put up a grand, $1,000 to be exact, to your measly $200 (that's 5 to 1 odds for the digitally illiterate) that says you're so wrong it hurts.

I know you're not the usual OT pussy/blowhard/basement dweller, so I'm assuming you'll post up and stand behind your prediction and take my bet like a man.

Pm me. I always answer, because I care.

Lol, I don't blame you for backtracking and slinking away, but you can't get out of this by trying to put the basic lack of reading comprehension on me. I'm a proud High School graduate!: :biggrin

Besides, we'll never know who voted how, it's all secret.

Oh, Nebor! Poor, dear, naive Nebor! If you don't think many, if not most of the details of who voted how will be leaked 7 ways to Sunday -- especially by those owners who voted against the lizard wizard -- I've got another sucker's bet to wager with you.

Want to bet on this? ():)

I think we should do a trading places thing and flip a coin on the whole matter.

Fucker is getting 1 billion? Even accounting for taxes that is more than he could ever spend in whatever is left in his 80 year old life.

Pretty good read. I was mostly with him until

Well-intentioned white people who work within or support the NBA should be demanding that the NBA power structure cede some of its governing power to men and women who look like the overwhelming majority of the league's players.

Because I hate that kind of idea. Power and responsibility should be granted by merit (good luck, right?). Race, ethnicity, religion, etc - they should be non-factors. If a black guy is the best man for the job, hey that's awesome let's pick him. But a person who's not as good of a candidate as should not get extra credit just for [not] being a certain color/ethnicity/etc either.

I have already said this and this author tends to agree:

To my ears, he doesn't care that his mistress has black friends. He doesn't care if she has sexual relationships with black men. He's married. They're not in a monogamous relationship. He simply does not want her extracurricular activities, particularly when they might involve black men, flaunted at his basketball games or all over Instagram.

That's really what this conversation was about and if it was with white players/men I am sure he'd be equally concerned...the fact is his mistress favors black/men of color.

He is definitely a racist just based on the last decade(s) of his actions...but that is not illegal.

Clearly this is a big publicity stunt......I'm sure NBA loves all the extra news/media attention they are getting......

I'm not backtracking or slinking away. Look at what I quoted, that's what I was betting on. My statement about the low number of owners in support was simply expanding on my opinion that there is no support to take away his team.

Plenty of owners could come out and say they voted against him just to reap the benefits, even if they voted with him. And it's unlikely to be a verbal vote, so the owners won't know how each other voted. That'll leave it up to Silver to leak the results, which I don't find likely.

I'm willing to bet that he keeps the team for the next 6 months, that's it.

sorry but a 6 month window is false bravado. Even if the owners voted 29-0 to force a sale, he'd get it stuck in the courts for way longer than 180 days.

He's highly incentivized to do this, esp. since his reputation is permanently in tatters anyway. If he passes away as owner, he gets to avoid 24% capital gains tax on $1+ billion. Presumably if he hasn't divorced, his estate passes to his wife with an unlimited exemption on estate tax. But I'm not a lawyer or tax advisor.
