Anyone have any tricks for surviving in survivor mode? The easiest stage for my friends and I is the wide open map on the airport level and camping in the corner to the right of where the van hits the gate.

A trick my friends and I have developed for the finale of the water boat level is o camp underneath the house and use the gas cans as molitovs for keeping the hordes at bay. Anyone else have any other tricks they wanna share?
 
Dunno really, only tricks i found are 1. Have a good team and 2. Find the best spot, simple as that really. Oh also always use shotgun, if someone joins and refuses to use the shotgun demonstrate its effectiveness by circling the person and using the shotgun on them, the other weapons are hopeless especially when the dual tanks come along.

If theres a gatling gun in a good spot it can help a lot with the right person on it. The right person would be able to spot smokers before getting yanked off the gun by them. The gun on no mercy is awesome, airport gun can be useful, the boathouse one is hopeless though because like 80% of the stuff comes from the left and the gun cant aim that far round because its angled slightly to the right. Dunno if that was deliberate or not.
 
On Last Stand, defend in the room closest to the ammo, 1 in each corner, and have everyone go out for ammo/health after each tank dies after the second tank death. Remember to take your first pipe bomb from a far away location you wont be going to after you've started the event. You can get gold defending this room alone and after you've used 8 health packs and pills, including the ones in the bathroom area adjacent to that room, everyone should go up to the roof together and use those supplies.
 
Try and find defensible areas where you only have to cover one or two sides. High ground is also generally a significant advantage, even if it seems inconveniently far from ammo and other supplies...there are several levels I have earned gold on without ever going on an ammo run, accomplishing this by forcing hoards into bottle necks and taking them and specials out with pistols only, and saving shotguns for tank...of which shotguns are absolutely crucial for several reasons - 1. multiplier damage (the closer you are, the more damage you do - at close range, shotguns are by far the most powerful weapons in the game, absolutely vital for bringing down multiple tanks), 2. hoard suppression (no other gun is as effective at dealing with large groups of hoards), 3. high ammo capacity relative to destruction capability (the only other viable weapon considering the massive amount of hoards, the AR, needs to be able to carry 300 extra rounds to last as long, ie instead of 50/360, more like 50/660)

I'll stop by offering a pair of related tips. First is grenades need to be used almost strictly with hoard suppression in mind. In campaign mode and vs., the strategy is to light a tank on fire and let him burn to death. The problem with that strategy is its useless for survival mode as you cannot run away from a tank until it burns to death as hoards never stop coming, and there very well may be more than one tank...thus what you need to do is use your grenades and fire sources to suppress hoards so you can then focus as much of your attention on the tank as possible. The second part to this is not to worry about rationing your supplies (although make sure you're coordinated on their use, throwing 2 pipe bombs at once is a clear waste, the more you worry about it the more likely you'll go without using them and you end up dying with several supplies that go unused.
 
Best advice is not to run from the tanks. You need to spot the tanks and take them out. You need at least two, preferably three shotguns and they should top them off when a tank is approaching. They should rely on pistols and grenades so that they can put 20-30 rounds into the tank once he gets close. The shotgun will not reload quickly enough if you aren't ready. You need at least one M-16 for smoker suppression if someone gets dragged to far away. You need to stay close enough together to melee smoker tongues, as that's the best defense.

But not running from the tanks is what separates the 4 minute teams and the 14 minutes teams. This is true in VS as well, by the way. Very good teams will take the tank on confidently because running will give the infected team to spawn in all four members.

also helps to coordinate when your shooting. I usually wait until a zombie breaks through before i start blasting.
 
use pistols on normal horde on the beginning to maximize bullet efficiency. use tovs properly on hordes. use pipes as distraction when making ammo runs. it helps to change defendable areas once in a while after an ammo run.

Crouch and aim at the head/torso.. Pistols lose power beyond 20 feet or so, so don't waste ammo trying to snipe with them. Those 30 bullets can end a horde if you're set up properly and they're funneling into you. And best of all they have endless ammo! 😀
 
I haven't seen it in this thread, but can you newbs stop suggesting that we start in one location, then move to another, then move to another, and another.. etc. It DOESN'T WORK.. You can rarely move far because you will ALWAYS get separated and jumped on before you get there with smokers and hunters.

I'm not sure if thats the strategy that Valve intended, it kind of seems that way, but in reality the strats others have said work better. Often the best spot is not near ammo and you have to live on the pistols.. Kind of dumb really.. all the propane and oxygen tanks are nearly useless as well, they all go up in the first minute and you can't leave them anywhere you have gas cans.

I really think Valve needs to do some tweaking of this mode.. they give you all these supplies, 98.44% of which you cannot use, or its used within the first 60 seconds and then gone. You can't get to other locations once you camp down, so all those supplies are useless as well. Maybe let players carry more than 1 pipe or moly or at least move them around so you don't have 100 grenades sitting on the other side of the map. You should be able to drop grenades and such.

Yeah the only moving people should be doing is maybe 1 ammo run, depends on the map.

The supplies isnt really a problem though, gives people the opportunity to try different areas/tactics etc. If you could drop these things it would lead to the monotenous and boring task of scouring the level for supplies and dropping them all in the best location, personally i couldnt be arsed with that but a lot of other people probably would do it.
 
I think I have golds on about half the maps.

Another tip is that if you're using the auto-shotty and others are using the M-16, use your pistols until the horde gets pretty close. The shotty loses a lot of power at range. Let you riflemen take care of thinning the herd at long ranges, as well as picking off smokers and hunters. The more ammo the shotgunners conserve, the better your changes of mauling a tank.
 
After reading 43st's comment about pistols losing power past 20 feet I looked up more information about weapons and their power and found some interesting stats on weapons.

Based on this information I think I'll wait til the hordes are at 100 feet and aim for their torso, firing 3 shots per zombie with my pistols. I never noticed pistols did more dmg at point blank.
 
Anyone have suggestions for Lighthouse? I think it's the best survival map but also the toughest, have only managed to get bronze so far. 🙁
 
I made some suggestions earlier in this post. Using that strategy I've gotten up to 9:35 with random players and usually get at least silver.
 
My biggest tip is too not use all of your mollies and pipebombs within the first 5 minutes. That is setting you up for failure and a quick death. The tip above about the tanks is a good idea. Trying to outrun one tank and get caught right next to another tank is a really PITA.

I actually made my highest time of 7:30 on Lighthouse by using all the molies and pipes quickly. Someone had the idea of moving from stash to stash, so we started in the generator room. We used all the molies and pipes there, then ran to the kitchenette/living room, and it all turned to shit there. There we just got swarmed by specials, and one or two of us made it to the roof above the generator. No one made it to the lighthouse beacon... Very hard strategy.
 
I finished my all-bronze last night, have 11/16 silvers, and 5/16 golds. I think most people covered the basics of strats here. If you need any specific map strats I can provide some. Generally speaking, moving around too much/spending time in an open area = pulled or pounced = death.

Damage = normal difficulty

so step up on tanks with the real guns, use pistols to conserve ammo on hoards.

Work together, focus on clearing specials before normal infected. Normal infected take small chunks outta you, getting pulled or pounced leads to chaos, without decent 'mates you are dead.

Have a mic (or type really fast! have a third/fourth arm maybe?)
