L2000C impressions

Last night I brought home a LG 2000c, based mostly on what I read on this forum (thanks xtknight and friends!). I was aware of the banding issue w/DVI but it didn't seem to be bothering people in games or other applications and everything else seemed great, so I figured I would go for it - I could always use analog if the banding was an issue. My old monitor was a 19" Sony 400PS, 1995 model.

I haven't had much time to spend on calibrating - I selected Normal mode (temp at 6500) and did the NVIDIA calibration (I have an FX 5200), resulting in Contrast at 46 (50 is default) and brightness at 65 (or so) to make the top 2 bars on the test pattern both black. I put aspect scaling on graphics card controlled (right?)

No dead pixels. No backlight bleeding. I do see a lighter circle about an inch around up near the left corner at the light blue Windows XP start up screen but not at the desktop (I tried several wallpapers) nor in any application.

I tried Far Cry (800 x 600 - any higher and my feeble system chugs) at the point I'm at (a lit corridor) and got into a fight with about 6 soldiers. No ghosting that I could see. It looked too bright to me and kinda fuzzy. I adjusted the in game gamma down some, which helped but the Sony was better (though it is easier to see the enemy now!).

Next I tried Half Life 2 (1024 x 768), at the Follow Freeman part of City 17 where all the snipers are. I played some outside and some inside a building. Colors were outstanding, as was clarity - it definitely was better than the Sony CRT. No ghosting.

So far, so good. Tell me what you would like me to do and I'll try, but I'm old and not near as smart as you guys, so keep it simple for my sake!! :)

Thanks for the time you put into this forum. Back to work now!

Have you tried it on DVI to see if you have banding?

As for the games being kind of fuzzy I found the scaling on my 2007FP was MUCH better on DVI than VGA.

Congratulations on your new monitor. I just got my first LCD as well a couple of weeks ago and I'm definitely never going back to CRT.

I however sure hope you are planning to upgrade that FX5200 soon :) Just the thought of a 20" LCD with a 1600x1200 native resolution being used to run games at 800x600 makes me want to shoot myself. It's like buying a Porsche to use it in a merry go round.

Actually next to 1600x1200, 800x600 should scale very nicely, espcially on DVI as it's exactly half of native.

I have one too, great monitor but I am pissed because it seems I am the only one witha stuck pixel. Not only that, but the flickering video I tried created ANOTHER stuck pixel. As you can imagine, I'm not pleased about that.

All info provided above was via DVI. I haven't noticed banding yet but I haven't been looking either - I wanted to get an initial impression that was general rather than trying to find trouble.

Sorry to hear about the stuck pixels - I bought mine from someone I knew, so I wouldn't have that hassle. It was worth a few extra $$!

As to the video card, I have an AGP board, so there isn't much point in upgrading to a new card until I get a new system (hopefully) later in the year. Actually, FEAR is the only game I have to play in 800 x 600, though I haven't bought Call of Duty 2 yet. And, I don't think the scaling is the issue per se - just the lack of shadow detail versus a Trinitron. I need to try some dark areas and calibrate more before I pass judgment. After all, HL2 looked great at 1024!

Sounds pretty good. If you don't mind trying somthing like TFT Test or xtKnigts gradients to see if you've got the banding issue. To be honest if i didn't do so much photo editing I'd be happy with the thing.

You really need to be running at native resolution to get full experiance for an LCD.

Where does one find those programs/tests?

Also, I'm having calibration issues. The NVIDIA test leads to low brightness to get the 2 black bars the same but an online test (drycreekphoto) showed those settings to be too dark. Currently, i have brightness at 55 and contrast at 72.

Well, it's always easier to go from worse to better, so i'll have something to look forward to!

Using xtknight's program, I saw a totally smooth blue gradient. The red and green gradients showed some very narrow lines toward the dark end of the spectrum - the lines aren't any different in color level; rather they appear almost as slightly raised up. like a topographical map. I'd say the red lines are slightly more pronounced than the green. The gray was the most prominent in that there were actual wider bands of color variation toward the dark end, though I would call them moderate rather than severe.

To my untrained eye, the blue smoothness is excellent, the red and green very good, with the gray being the area where it looks less smooth, though only on the dark end of the spectrum.

From the pictures, I've noticed that the stand holds the monitor up really high. Can that be adjusted to be lower to the ground? Can you tell me about how high off the ground the lcd is held at the lowest height?
