L2 cache enabled in bios but not working?!

Ok I have spent the last two days trying to get a k62 500 to work in my old socket 7 board. After several bios flashes I finally got it to work just by dropping the fsb to 66 mhz down from the 83 I was using. Everything is perfectly stable now at 400 except on minor thing, performance is not near where I think it sould be, to the point where my 266 mhz k6 laptop was out doing it. So I have downloaded a whole bunch of cpu info programs and not one of them says that my l2 cache is there, even though its enabled in bios. I am wondering if anyone has any idea on how to fix this, I tried reflashing the bios again, but it didn't work, and I don't want to flash it too many times so that I ruin it. any suggestions would be a great help.

ps it is an old pcchips board (m571) that I got for free.

Edit: Ok, I just ran the same programs (WCPUID & CPUinfo) on the k6 and it neither reported a l2 cache either, is this normal? For now I'll assume that it is there and working, though I don't understand why it seems slower than a 266 k6.

It sounds like your motherboard doesn't support that CPU. You will have nothing but problems until you upgrade the board.
