KyroII vs. Radeon, my own little comparison.

Well I spent some time with Kyro and now I am trying out the Radeon. Flat out the Radeon kicks Kyro's @ss in Quake3. When I say smooth as a babys bottom and prettier than Halle Berry, I kid you you not. The image of the Radeon is smoking. The KyroII was pretty good as well, but clearly not as good as the Radeon. The toughest test I believe is Unreal 1. The Kyro was pretty good. The Radeon is struggling a bit. I am going to do a fresh Install of the game and see what happens. Both are fast, but the Radeon is a freaking monster with beauty in Q3. If there is a "Beauty and the Beast" in Q3 the Radeon is it. Also there is a situation with anistropic filtering in Direct3d with KyroII. It was running Unreal nicely. I enabled it and it just fell apart. If you wondering why just these two games. Quake3 is to me is the standard today and if your card can run Unreal 1 it is by far the most difficult from yesteryear. The Kyro is nice make no mistake about it, but this Radeon is blazing. Both have great 2d, not that Geforce 2 mess. And I think both are have better image quality than the Geforce 2. I wish I had kept the Kyro a little lonegr to compare in more games and things though. I haven't tried DVD playback on the Radeon yet :). The Kyro was pretty good though, smooth, and very sharp in DVD playback. Just my own little comparison. On a side note the Radeon I have is the 5.5 sec one :(. If I decide to keep it I will definately hunt down a 5 sec version. :)

I'm awaiting delivery of a 64 mg Radeon from newegg and am so glad to read your review of how pretty Q3 is with this card.

I'm so excited now :)

I'd agree that the Radeon has awesome picture quality. Though I've never seen the KyroII, I have compared it with the Geforce. QIII looks super and the smoke/explosion/color effects are outstanding. I feel sorry for the Radeon because it does cost frame rate to do this and people who are buying cards based on frame rate alone are bypassing it with out realising what they are are visually going to miss out on. I play some flight sims as well, and the effects you get in combat really help bring out the whole experience.

My Kyro 2 is faster in Quake 3 than my Radeon 64mb was. You need to make sure texture compression is enabled. I dont notice any difference really in image quality, other than the sky in quake 3 is not all messed up like it was on a GF card.

Hmmm..........when I forced texture compression in the KyroII drivers, the picture became all garbled and serious texture thrashing occured. As for speed, they were both fast. The Kyro "benched" faster, but in actual gameplay online no less, the Radeon is smoother. I haven't even tweaked the Radeon either. In Q3 and I am Quake junky, the Radeon has no equal. I play mostly rail and to be able to see your opponent across the entire map with some decent clarity is a plus. :). Ask the boys last night I was playing. They'll tell Superman was on a Rampage! :D

Maybe so. But I doubt it. The Radeon is rocking. But I tried both Hercules drivers and the Kyro II latest drivers from Kyro. They don't have a lot of settings like 3dfx. But no question the Radeon is as smooth as a baby's buns. I liked the Kyro though. Let me reload Unreal 1 and then I'll have a better picture. ;) But for right now if you play rail in Q3, beware of Superman :Q.

Classy,

? Hmmm..........when I forced texture compression in the KyroII drivers, the picture became all garbled and serious texture thrashing occured.?

Errrr ? I believe that occurs when both Quake3 and the KYRO drivers are trying to compress. If the game has compression in it then don?t compress through the drivers as well, always (and only) in the actual game engine itself.

I had a radeon 32mb DDr retail card and have a voodoo5, which one looked better in Quake3? very close, I felt the voodoo5 looked better, but it was so close it didn't matter.
which card was faster? well if you went by benchmarks the radeon was, but if you played the game the V5 was smoother and pulled the load better under high load conditions.
now this was with latest drfivers and tweaks at the time (dec. 2000) maybe the radeons drivers are better now.
this was on win98se

Hmmm.....kinda funny how Classy doesn't include even a single benchmark result to backup his "facts".

radeon will kick kyro ass in quake 3 only if you have a sub 600 mhz cpu ...
and I am not kidding quake 3 use very little T&L.

rubberneck, its a known fact that some companies have and do jimmy around with their drivers to produce high benchmark numbers at the expense of a smooth framerate. So Classy's first hand experience is valid and appreciated.

I can vouch for the Radeon's image quality too, I held onto my V3 for ages, but even games like Counterstrike look so sweet @32-bit with the Radeons image quality that I'm very glad I switched.

seems to me classy is talking quality, not quantity. framerates say nothing about the image quality.

i LOVE my kyro2. haven't seen a radeon, so i can't compaire, but i'm so happy with this card i have no desire to switch(don't have to $ anyway)

fly it like you stole it

Firstly you mustn't have thought that out very well as POWERVIDEOTS makes no sense at all. Who is Powerv and what are ideots? Secondly what exactly did you find to be stupid about powervr2's post? He gave a very valid opinion which has been proved true by review after review. Being interested in a chip or technology and showing that by posting about it allot does not make someone an idiot, what does make someone and idiot is insulting people just because they don't share your opinion.

Notice the title, this is his opinion and his experience, he can say whatever he wants, though some benchmarks online may not agree, he feels that the Radeon is smoother, enough said. =)

Here's my input, I have a Kyro 2 and a friend of mine has an ATI Radeon. I have to admit that his Radeon has excellent image quality, it's much better than any Nvidia card I've seen and it's about the same as my Kyro 2. As for speed, we have almost identical Duron PC's and my Kyro 2 is faster (not my a huge amount) on most of the games we both play.
