KVM Switch question

I'm thinking of buying the KVM-K102SK 2 PC KVM switch from newegg.com. Does anyone have any experience with this product? I've heard of some kvm switches having trouble with using the intellimice and intellikeyboards. Since I have both a natural keyboard pro, and an intellimouse explorer, I'm wondering if there will be any problems with this switch.

I'll also take any recommendations on a good KVM switch if you got any. I'm not looking to spend more than 60 dollars though.

Here's the link to the switch I'm looking at: D-Link KVM pic

Thanks.

I've never had any trouble with any of the KVM's i've used with my intellimouse explorer.. might I add though... the KVM you picked is only ugly looking piece of hardware.

😛

I agree, one of the people who reviewed it added: "Initially I looked else where, because I am not into this "neon pimping" look." But if it works and is only 50 dollars, I'll take it, since it will be buried under a pile of wires behind my desk anyway.

Thanks everyone for the advice. That KVM you posted conjur looks like the "mother" of all KVMs, but it's a bit outside my price range.

Why not get one of the KVM's listed on this page? The one that you're looking at is a Linskey...not a D-Link. I've heard pretty good things about the D-Link, and it looks a lot better than the one that you want!! 😛 And for $3 less I might add. Hope this helps.

I've had a few problems with different Brands/Models of KVMs. Strangly, I've had the most problems with the Belkin OmniView series. On some mobos, I will occasionally just "lose" the mouse on a machine and have to reboot that machine in order to get it back.

I also recently had a problem with an intellimouse/kvm/Red Hat 7.2 (KT7a Raid board).... MS OS' didn't have any problems, but if I attatched the intellimouse though the KVM to Red Hat, the mouse would act crazy. I finally just hooked up a seperate mouse directly to the RedHat box.

In general though, KVMs are priceless!

I like the D-Link DKVM-2/A (or the 4-port version) ..........as someone else in a KVM thread mentioned ........... get one that has all the connections in the rear of the unit (except for the front console connectors) ........... makes for a much smaller footprint on your desktop than one of those "octopus" type with connectors on all sides!

Just something to think about before making the purchase ............ ?

I've got the D-Link 2 comp switch that has the connections in the back (I like it better that way. less of a mess). I've had great results with it. The only thing you have to watch out for is cables. Your monitor signal will degrade quite a bit after passing through the KVM so quality cables are essential. I ended up buying 3 sets of KVM cables before I found a good set (and got a REALLY thick d-sub to BNC cable to go to my monitor).

From my experience, Belkin OmniCube KVM switches are simply worthless. After reading the above post, I will stay away from Belkin products whenever possible.

BTW, I find remote control apps (e.g., VNC) to be far more convenient than any KVM switch.

Well I'm glad I did a search before I started a new thread - it's even quite recent!

I just acquired a Linksys KVM switch (the kit that includes the cables), and I absolutely love it (running my desktop and laptop/docking station from one console - priceless), but I am having one problem with it, and am hoping someone might be able to offer some advice.

I have a Logitech Trackball with scroll wheel, and it works just fine whether plugged directly into my desktop or laptop/docking station. However, when I plug the trackball into the KVM switch, it no longer works at all on the laptop/docking station (which has two PS/2 ports). The laptop disables the integral touchpad, so I know it "sees" the external mouse through the KVM switch, but the pointer does not respond to any movement. Therefore, with the KVM switch connected, I have zero pointer movement capability.

Things I tried:
1) Swapping the two KVM cables between machines, same result (meaning the cables are both ok)
2) Swapping which KVM ports (PC 1 vs. PC 2) are connected to which machine, same result (meaning the ports are both ok)
3) Using a different mouse, plugged into the KVM switch, same result
4) Plugging the trackball directly into the docking station while still using the KVM for monitor and keyboard, everything works (but now the desktop can't "see"/use the trackball)

What I haven't tried yet:
Plugging the two PS/2 cables from the KVM switch to a PS/2 splitter and directly into the single PS/2 port on the back of the laptop (undocked), which worked for the keyboard/trackball combo before I had the docking station.

End result: I have the KVM all connected, save for the mouse cable on the docking station side, where I have a crappy old beat-up Acer mouse directly connected to the docking station - so I have one monitor and one keyboard for both machines (yay), but have to use two different mice. I'm thinking tolerance/attenuation buildup between the trackball, KVM switch, KVM cable, docking station, and laptop is the culprit, but I have no idea how to solve or circumvent the problem.

Now, assuming y'all can follow all my incessant rambling, anybody got any ideas?

Jason
