KVM switch question

Hey I have a question about KVM switches. Will they still work without a video signal? If i have 2 pcs and 1 monitor. If I have one of the pcs attached to a display port input and have the other pc attached to a hdmi input, so all I have to do is hit a button on the monitor to change port, can i use a kvm switch to just switch which pc the keyboard will work with? Rather than looking for one that has both display port and HDMI.

We use one of these at work for this very purpose: http://amzn.com/B001D1UTC4 . We use it to switch KB/Mouse between 2 computers that are connected to 1 monitor. Then we just switch inputs on the monitor.
