I'm not sure exactly what it is I need to purchase.

Use Case: I would like to use the same keyboard, mouse, and dual monitors for my Desktop and my work Laptop

Equipment:
Desktop: I have 1x HDMI and 1x DIsplayport. No USB-C
Laptop: I have a USB-C port which I use in the office with my docking station.
Monitors: 1 x HDMI 1.4, 1 x DP 1.2
Keyboard/Mouse : USB

Normally I wouldn't bother trying to hook up my laptop however I have to use my work laptop in order to connect to our VPN.

I found something like this on Amazon:
But I just don't know if that is what I want.

TIA!

you need a KVM not a docking station..
Although you will probably need both... a KVM connected to the laptop docking station and your PC, to make your laptop transition from docking to portable seamless.

But the dual monitors is what will hurt you, as i can't think of any cheap kvm's which have dual monitor support.

Yeah I saw the prices of the dual monitor kvms. I don't mind spending up to $150ish for a KVM.

I'm dealing with a similar thing. I have a triple monitor setup at home and have been working from home for quite some time. I've been using LogMeIn to my desktop at the office. I also have a work laptop for when I'm in the field. Its not terrible, but not ideal. So I'm getting a new laptop to replace the other 2 machines. Here is my plan.

Home desktop connects to the three monitors using DP.
Work Laptop will connect to a docking station with 3 monitor connections (2 DP will be converted) to the HDMI on my 3 monitors.
My USB Keyboard and Mouse will connect to both the docking station and the desktop with a USB switch.

Hope that makes sense, maybe it will work for you as well.

So a USB switch like this?

That makes sense. If I get that USB C adapter, it has 2xhdmi out. My desktop has 1xhdmi & 1xdisplayport so for it, I can get a hdmi->display port cable and another regular displayport cable.
