KVM causes mouse to slow and sometimes beep

I have a desktop PC and a laptop. I got a KVM so that I can share my PS/2 mouse and keyboard between those 2 computers. My desktop PC and my laptop's docking station have PS/2 ports for the mouse and keyboard.

After connecting everything to the KVM, I noticed the mouse pointer movement is slow. On both computers I set the mouse speed to the maximum, but when using the mouse thru the KVM, the pointer is slower on both computers.

Also, another strange thing is that if the desktop PC is powered on, then the mouse works fine (albeit slow) on the laptop. But if the desktop PC is powered off, then the mouse won't move on the laptop. Instead, when I try to move the mouse, the laptop beeps several times. I actually have 2 of the docking stations, so I tried again with the other docking station and it has the same problem.

I wonder if I should try a different brand KVM (this one is a Tripp Lite 2-computer KVM).

Yep, this is the only way you'll know what the problem is. For what it's worth, I used a Belkin years ago and it didn't have much of a tracking issue. Normally I am not a big fan of Belkin products, but in this instance, it was a good device.

I have used a few PS/2 KVM switches that got the device power from the computer attached to connection 1, no matter which connection was actively being used at the time, so if computer 1 was off, the other machines didn't work properly. It sounds like your KVM might be doing the same thing. It might also just be a bad/failing device. I agree with Ketchup and suggest that you try a different KVM.
