If I'm not mistaken, no US refineries have been built in about 30 years. That's a pretty long-running scheme. They may not be building more refineries because there won't be enough oil around long enough to recoup the cost. They've been scaling back exploration for new fields because they've lost their shirts on that the past few years.

The real reason they aren't being built is the red tape surrounding them. Same with nuclear reactors.

If you have a problem with gas prices then blame the gas companies. Look at exxonmobil's profits.
