Kucinich: House International Relations Committee Once Again Shuns War Oversight Duties

House International Relations Committee Narrowly Rejects Kucinich Resolution of Inquiry On White House Iraq Group (WHIG)

WASHINGTON - November 9 - Today, by a narrow 25-23 vote, the House International Relations Committee rejected a Resolution of Inquiry, offered by Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) and co-sponsored by 106 Members of Congress, demanding all documents produced by the White House Iraq Group (WHIG).

The Kucinich Resolution (H. Res. 505) demanded that the White House turn over to Congress all white papers, minutes, notes, emails or other communications kept by the WHIG. Kucinich's resolution was supported by all Democrats at the committee hearing and Congressman Paul (R-TX) and Congressman Leach (R-IA).

After the vote, Kucinich issued the following statement:

"Congress has a Constitutional duty to provide oversight of the Executive Branch. Today the House International Relations Committee, once again, shunned this vital duty.

"We now know that the Administration hyped intelligence and misled the American public and Congress in their effort to 'sell' the war. This group, comprised of the President and Vice President's top aides, was critical in this effort.

"Congress and the American people have a right to these documents, and a right to know the truth.

"This Congress can no longer pass the buck on accountability. With over 2,000 US troops killed in Iraq and tens of thousands more injured, it is long past time that this Congress wakes up and ask the serious questions that the American public is demanding answers to.

"Time after time this Congress has failed its Constitutional duty, and failed the American public. This Congress has become nothing more than a rubber stamp for this Administration and their policies. We owe the American public better. That is what today's resolution was about."

Shocking, isn't it? Apparently the reason this resolution didn't pass was because of two democrats who failed to show up. Were they bought off? I'd think somthing like this would be kind of important to attend -- I know I'd be there

I believe there are seperation issues with what he wanted to do. There is a level of privacy which is supposed to be granted to the executive branch.

If these guys were serious they wouldnt be screwing around delaying the senate intelligence comittees phase two report that is dealing with this very issue.

Once again I have to ask why Bush doesn't just demand an investigation into the lead up to the war, the intelligence, everything. After all wouldn't it just prove Bush was right?

awwww......
I couldn't keep a straight face typing this...

Ah...Good ol Kucinich. One of the few people to actually read and vote against the PATRIOT ACT, instead of voting for it and then bitching about it later like the rest.

Nice to see he's still trying to get this administration to open up. Too bad this didn't pass.

I like Kucinch... a lot of his views are too left for me, but I think he's one of the most honest, dedicated reps in Congress.

Indeed. He's one of those people you can like and respect, yet disagree with at the same time. And unlike most politicians, he doesn't change his position whenever the wind blows in the wrong direction. Don't always agree with the man, but I still respect him a hell of a lot more than most politicians.

Until Kucinich gets rid of that ridiculous toupee, how can anyone take anything he says seriously? Did he lose a bet or something and have to wear that thing?

It appears that the Whitehouse Iraq Group was created to sell the Iraq war link. I think the Whitehouse knew that the American public would have never accepted the justification for the Iraq war purely on its merits.

Go to his website! He is not too much to the left! He defends the people against the corporations.

For example (from his website):

Tax Windfall Profits of Oil Companies

What more do we need to know about the rising price of gasoline? Profits are soaring to all time highs while oil companies raise prices with impunity. Oil runs the White House, puts us into war, runs geopolitics, frustrates the development of alternative energy, ruins the environment. What will it take for the Congress to wake up? $5 a gallon?

There is a short term, effective solution: The Gas Price Spike Act of 2005. This bill exacts a 100% windfall profits tax on oil companies on excessive profits. The money gained from the windfall profits tax would be put into a fund for tax breaks for the purchase of ultra-efficient vehicles made in the US. Money would also be made available for mass transit assistance.
Review the bill and its sponsors here.
Only a 100% windfall profits tax will cause the oil companies to stop their aggressive pricing which is destroying the budgets of millions of American families. I need your help to wake up the Congress and pass this legislation. >>

The corporate media paint him as too much to the left...for them. If you want an honest president, support him! The corporate media sabotaged his campaign in 2004, and Dean's campaign too. If Kucinich does not gather a large support among the population a long time before the primaries, the corporate media will take control of the primaries again and favour the candidates who are the good old friends of the big corporations...once more. You have to wake up and campaign before the corporate media tell you too; by that time it is too late.
