KT7A Raid - HELP!! Please! - **UPDATE** FIXED PROBLEM - PLS READ!

Hi All! I just put this thing together last night... I have built several systems but am having probs with this...

System Specs:

Athlon Thunderbird 700 (unlocked @ factory)
384MB PC133
1 Xentor32 (TNT2Ultra - AGP)
1 Maxtor 20GB UDMA 100
1 Soundblaster Live Value
1 Creative Flash 56 PCI Modem
1 Cendyne 12x DVD
1 Zip 250
1 Floppy

PROBLEM:

When powering up, I hear a sustained beep and the system powers off within 4 sec. Will not go to post screen or anything.

Steps I've Taken:

I've checked all connections and even re-seated the CPU/Memory/AGP to be sure... - NO LUCK.

I've taken out all PCI cards and removed the DVD/Zip from the equation. - NO LUCK.

I've tried booting with no IDE devices to see if I could get to the POST screen - NO LUCK.

I've removed all Memory except for 1 - NO LUCK.

Yes - THE CPU Fan is plugged into Fan1.



The only thing I can think of is it might be the video card... Everything worked fine on my FIC AZ11 board... I am STUMPED! HELP! :frown:
 
got mine up and running last night! was easiest build ive done.. seems like a good
board. running a 900@1000 right now.. still trying to find a happy medium with the
speed.

did you clear the cmos with the cmos clear jumper and then try to boot? try doing that
and see what happens..

 

Here is just a thought because I ran into a similar problem with an EPOX board. I believe your board supports 133 MHz FSB with the new Via KT133A chipset. The Epox board does too and has a jumper that selects either 133 MHz or 100 MHz bus. I mistakenly thought that my Athlon Thunderbird 1 Ghz supported 133/266 MHz FSB and found out later it does not and they aren't even available yet. If the Asus has a similar jumper I would suggest making sure it is set to the 100 MHz setting as I am somewhat sure your CPU doesn't support 133/266 either unless you've got some inside connections. 😉

I think the BIOS is supposed to determine the config automatically... I've been thru the jumpers and there aren't any really relevant to the config...

There is one I question... JP1 (near the PCI slots)... I can't find a reference to this one... Anybody know what it controls?? Maybe this is the problem...
 
Sadly enough, No... ABIT does not have info on the error code nor on JP1... 🙁

I want this board to work! ARRRGGGGGGHHHHHH.....
 
man.. I don't know.. what cooler are you running? maybe the fan isn't fast enough? or doesn't have rpm sensing? do you have another video card you could try?
 
The Heatsink/Fan I have installed is the Taisol one... Approved by AMD. Taisol CEK733

As for another Video card, I can go out and pick up another today to just test it... PCI or another AGP? Which one? I just can't understand why my Xentor32 wouldn't work when it does fine in my FIC AZ11 board...
 
As DarrylH said, your machine is trying to boot at 931. Maybe your cpu can't handle it? One way to be sure would be to get a different cpu ans try.

Also, comb the forums at www.amdzone.com

I just bought the non-raid version, hopefully all will go smooth.
 
Try plugging the CPU fan into a different header on the MoBo. I know for a fact that the Kt7a's will automatically power down if the fan isn't plugged into the right connector. (CPU 1 I think)

nesta that can't be right my 900 booted at 9x100 the first time on my kt7a-raid. if that was the case then I would have had this problem too cause mine would have booted at 1197 which would have been very hard at stock voltage I believe.
 
Did you make sure that your CPU fan is connected to FAN1.

That is a new "safety feature" in the KT7A (or Raid)
motherboards to stop overheating the CPU.
 
FIXED!

Okay All! Here's the fix... Your'e gonna love this...

Fan1 - We all now no this "safety feature" will power off the board if the CPU is not plugged in their... right?

Fan2 - Used if needed... right?

I unplugged the CPU Fan from Fan1 and plugged it into Fan2.

I then plugged one of my case fans into Fan1... Guess what happened?

IT BOOTED UP! OMG! I don't get it! HAHAHAHA... I'm laughing because I thought the board was toast and I was about to give up on ABIT forever... LOL!!!

So, I now am thinking, why did this happen? I have two possible ideas...

1. The Tysol Fan/Heatsink really doesn't spin at the advertised rate of 4000 RPM...

or

2. There is some weird bug with the WW BIOS... I don't know... I'm going to fire off an email to ABIT to advise them... (doubtful they'll look at it)... I'm also considering getting another heatsink/fan...



Thanks so much all! You guys held me together during this... I really was ready to say screw it and toss the board in the "extra" components pile... LOL!
 
Flash your BIOS to the newer wz.b01, it has an option to disable the fan protection, plus fixes:

0.Based on KT7_WW.BIN
1.Fixes wrongful registry setting of "Bank x/y Dram Timing"
for normal/medium/fast/turbo with CL=2 setting.
2.Fixes wrongful registry setting of "Bank x/y Dram Timing"
for normal/medium/fast/turbo with 133FSB Athlon CPU. For
KT7A and KT7A-RAID only.
3.Adds an option to disable fan1 error check and changes the
default setting to disable.
 
or maybe the yellow line of your cpu fan header is broken?!?! if you go to bios now, can you read the speed of fan2 (the one connected to the hsf)? if it reads zero, maybe that's the reason. the yellow line, i think, is used to checked for the rpm. if it is broken, the board doesn't detect spinning, sure it turns off.

The first boot is default multiplier * 100? Cool, good to know. I thought I read somewhere that it was multiplier * 133.

Congrats KRidder, now let us know how the thing OC's.
