kt7-raid + DVD

I have a kt7-raid, just built the system, trying to get the OS on. I booted off a boot disk with the CD drivers, but for some reason it can't find the DVD drive (it says no drives found). my config on the mobo is:

regular IDE channels (non ATA100)
primary: none
secondary: none

ATA100 IDE channels:
primary master: hard drive
secondary master: DVD drive

could it be that the boot disk drivers are looking on the regular IDE channels? the highpoint ATA100 stuff appears to load properly as it shows the two devices, but I'm not sure what to do...

ok, strangely enough it now recognizes the drive when I move it to a non ATA100 channel. what causes this? can it cause future drive recognition problems?

ditto. ATAPI devices (Zip, DVD, CDRW, CD) are not reccomended on any non-default controller. (Highpoint or Promise)

My KT7 & Pioneer 12/40 don't seem compatible. Reads CDs, but not DVDs. Do I just have an expensive CD-Rom? Anybody have this problem?

I had to move my hard drive to the non ATA100 controller to get windows installed and then the highpoint controller drivers before I could use it properly. I believe that is the way that Abit suggests.
