What a dummy..."oh my wrist I got chopped!" and he collides with a teammate, freeing up that Boston player to get the winning goal.

Edit: Yes, he should have gotten the call, but he was a dummy for giving up on the play. He should have kept at it even if his wrist was broken.

No offense...but bullsh!t.

There were a ton of penalties in the OT's that weren't called...ON BOTH SIDES. Montreal had just had a OT PP and the Bruins hadn't had one... Call or no call, there is no reason to stop playing. Plain and simple...he embellished it big time, and got his just reward.

Edit:

Sheldon Souray:

And Souray was cutting Kovalev no slack. "I saw he got slashed," Souray said. "Maybe it should be a penalty, but do you stop playing? In double overtime? They had already called a penalty against him, they're going to let you play at that point. I was just caught by surprise that he left the puck there and there was nobody behind him. So obviously, you want to go back and get the puck."

Coach Claude Julien:

Coach Claude Julien's take wasn't much different. "I think it's important to keep playing," Julien said. "If it's not called a penalty then you can't stop playing."

Those are quotes from his teamate and coach, in the Montreal papers.

I agree with you Insane3D. The first thing you learn when you play sports is to play to the referee's wistle. Slash or no, he shouldn't have stopped.

Still doesn't make the slash any less of a slash. It SHOULD have been called and it wasn't. He was stupid for the play he made of course, but it doesn't make the slash go away.

The thing that pisses me off most about hockey this year (and many others) is that they'll call everything for 2 periods, then put the whistles away for the 3rd and whatever o/t there is. Call the game the way it's supposed to be called. That was a slash to the wrist which could quite easily have broken his hand. That's a penalty no matter what you say. Look it up in the rule book. It doesn't say "...unless it's overtime of a playoff game" after every rule does it?

Of course there's the chance that the refs just missed the call. THIS should be the case where you tell a player to keep playing. Refs sometimes miss calls, so you should always keep playing until you hear the whistle. By saying that there is a different standard between the first two periods of a game and the end of the game you just encourage dives, embellishment, and Kovalev-ness in the early part of the game, and gratuituous clutching/grabbing, slashing, roughing, etc in the later part of the game.

I would rather have the refs call all of the penalties as stated in the rule book ALL THE TIME, regarless of who it is, or at what point in what game. Sure, there will be a glut of powerplays to begin with until players learn, but that's not the ref's fault if someone slashes a guy's hands. Just don't slash and you won't have any problems. I'd rather watch skilled players skate than goons grab and hook.

I'm not saying he's right in stopping. In fact he's in the wrong. He should suck it up and play. I mean it's double o/t...

Still doesn't make the slash any less of a slash though.

Typical Kovalev. He is a puss who dives for calls.

He did this years ago against the Nords. He got tapped in the back with a stick, Sakic scored and Kovalev layed on the ice for five minutes like someone stabbed him.

I just watched the highlight from nhl.com... he got whacked in his right hand... and that's his top hand. There's no way he'd be able to play the puck afterward so he went for the call.

It was just short-sighted of him to get in Souray's way.

Well Kovalev had four choices:
1) Keep going up the ice with the play and try his best to keep Boston from scoring, even if it's just throw his body around and try to knock the guy off the puck.
2) Dodge the play (and especially his teammate) coming up the ice, then go for the ref to argue for a penalty.
3) Give up completely on the play, try to draw a penalty by emphasizing (almost to absurdity) that he's hurt, and don't make any effort to avoid anyone coming up the ice, especially teammates.
4) Dodge the play (and especially his teammates) coming up the ice, skate off the ice as soon as it was clear and just mark it down as another missed call, so typical of the playoffs.

He chose #3. He chose poorly.

Yes he overemphasized it, but there should have been a call regardless of whether the Bruins just got called before (justly, on a very high elbow might I add).

In any event, the game should have been over at the end of the third and it would have been if any of the following conditions had been met:
1) Rivet wasn't an idiot for dumping it out
2) Rivet wasn't an idiot for letting Samsonov draw the puck back after Dowd won the faceoff
3) Markov did his job and movde Knuble from the front of the net or lifted his stick instead of watching him stickhandle
4) Julien gave that faceoff to Perrault (arguably the league's best faceoff man) instead of Dowd
5) Theodore hadn't let in 2 crappy goals prior to that

Oh and you're a bastard for rubbing this in with its own thread; you couldn't just keep it in the Bruins thread could you? :p ;)

I can't seem to find the highlight.

They only have the current days highlights available. They removed it for tonights highlights. You can see it on TSN's site, but you need to sign up first (free).

This link should work for you.

There are two settings...56K and High Speed. The high speed feed is pretty clear. You can also choose to open in WMP.
