For example, there is a whole murder mystery quest on one planet that only triggers if you have a certain person in your party and if you haven't gotten them yet before going there, you'll never see it.

yeah I got that quest, failed to find the guy innocent but managed to make them drop the death penalty

are there just a set of 9 characters you can have or are there more?

Hmm, well since we're talking about it already, I suppose it wouldn't be out of line to be asking:

This is my first run-through of this game, and after the Jedi initiation on Dantooine, what is the best route to take, as in which planet should I visit first to recover their star forges??

I'd say stay away from Keyshekk (sp?) for a while, but mostly it doesn't really matter much.

I saw a game magazine a few months ago in which the developers had the recommended order to go thru, but I can't remember exactly how it went, but it was something like: Tatooine, Wookieworld, Waterworld, Sithworld. There are a couple of other places you go, but they're hardwired in and you'll go there when the game tells you you go there. Korriban - Sithworld - should be saved for last so you'll be leveled up and Force powered.

yes that's a good order. though if you visit the wookie planet first you'll get jolee first who is an excellent help.

Well to be honest I am in Tatooine already but the Sand people are kicking my ass so I was wondering if there was a buffer planet I should've went to instead . . ..

I played Kashyyyk first and found it pretty OK.. I agree that Jolee is a big help though. The sand people are just light saber fodder after leveling up! :D

I took Bastilla for Jedi power and either Carth (Xbox) or HK-47 (PC) to provide a mix of ranged and melee power with Jedi healing, etc. But, do what you want, there is no *wrong* way.

A tip that could be considered a spoiler, but you'll thank me later: On Tatooine, you'll be offered an opportunity to sell some pearls you obtain. DON'T!!!! They're usable to modify your lightsabres and they become serious badass if you haven't sold the pearls.

After less than an hour on Waterworld - after doing Wookieworld and Dune - I'm a Level 9 Jedi Guardian/Level 5 Soldier swinging a pair of sabres that deal 14-35 and 12-38 damage with +20 and +21 to hit, respectively and I've absolutely bottomed out on the Dark Side including having a Dark Mastery bump. (I'm a Samuel L. Jackson-grade "bad Oedipus"!!!)

Wow. Thanks for all your help. It's five in the morning now and I didn't realize it until I looked at the clock . . . - yep, I was playing Kotor until now.

Damn this game is addictive.

I pretty much skipped the last few posts. :p Before I went to bed last night at 2am I had rescued Bastila. Now we have to find a way off Taris.

It was a tough battle for me to get the swoop bike accelerator from those guarding it (we were weakened by the foes we faced getting there) so it took me several attempts to kill them. I was too lazy and tired to backtrack far enough so I could rapid transit to my apartment and heal up my party. I wound up killing most of the guards with grenades.

I can't kill the Sith Govenor. My party consists of the Droid and Bastila. Should I go get Carth or the Wookie instead of the Droid?

Edit for spelling

It's amazing. It's the first game since Civ that actually kept me up into the wee hours of the morning even though I had to go to work in less than 4 hours.

And it's got great replayability. And not just because of the light/dark issue, which is cool. But, the first time through, I leveled up every time I could, and found myself not being able to level as high in Jedi as I wanted to. So the next time around, I kept my char at level 2 and didn't level him up again until Jedi time, and then BAM like 6 instant levels and lotsa new Jedi powers to toy with. Of course, the game's pretty dang hard when you're stuck at level 2 and trying to become the dueling champion.

I also loved how every single piece of dialog was spoken... and spoken well, I might add. What NWN should have been. Deus Ex 2 went a step farther and spoke aloud the main character as well, but the voice acting in that one pales in comparison to KOTOR.

All around, a just-about-perfect game. One area that I wish was changed would be how the party responds to light vs dark. I was wanting more of a Baldurs Gate feel where the Evil characters didn't quite enjoy being a part of the a Good party and vice versa. I realize a couple of characters are vital to the plot, but it would be nice if some of those characters refused to join your Light or Dark party... or at least voiced their opposition more (and had more companion to companion interaction).

you have to kill him to get the code to leave the planet i think.

iirc the governor uses energy shields so i just equipped melee on all my characters (bastila and carth) and went all out on him. i didn't use the droid after opening the gates because it looks flimsy and can't melee.

I killed him, I wound up backtracking far enough to get to my base and I got Carth in exchange for the Droid. We all had heavy blasters (Bastila had the double ended lightsaber) and I lobbed 4 frag grenades at Guvnor first thing. My character was only hanging by like 20 vitality points when Guvnor finally died.

Now to get on the Ebon Hawk. :)

I dont remember a sith governor on taris, didnt even enter the sith base at all, just shows what a great game this is :)

edt.
now I do remember, it was short and easy, didnt have much trouble with him at all. There were two realy hard parts in the game, the Sand people and the final guy.

 I wasted an hour of my REAL time trying to kill the sucker. I'm just glad I did it. :) I'm more an FPS kind of guy, this game requires a completely different gaming skill set.

The sand people and the final guy were really really easy for me  I was a level 8 Scout and level 12 Jedi Guardian.

The most problem I had was killing Twitch the rodian and Bendak Starkiller... what did you guys do? I can't remember what I did with Twitch, but I ended up wiping Bendak's ass with a few plasma grenades.

Finally finished the game. Time to embrace the dark side now :D

Edit: BTW how did you managed to stay at level 2? You don't do any of the side quests?

Twitch wasnt much of a problem for me and I never got to fight Bendak.

What I hated about the final guy was that I couldnt hit him at all, my tactic was to throw an adhesive granade at him and then a few plasma ones to do little damage without getting hurt, and then go close and fight him head on. After about 5 turns I run away and use heal and healing packs like crazy, and try to do it all over again.

then I figured heeey I had this shield pack thing, so I used it so now he did 5 points of damage to me instead of 30-60, that worked for a while untill I ran out of those. Thats when I noticed these boosters which I had never used before so I activated all the boosters I had and went to fight him again and damn it was easy after that :p. So instead of *miss*miss*miss* it was *30*50*40* or something :D

I thought the last guy was fairly easy... it took me 2 tries of course, but like you said, if you have the shield, you can tank him quite easily. With the strength stim packs and some +5 gloves i had, i was able to get my strength to obscene numbers (... 27-28 i think). Add the combat stim, and Master Speed, and Furry attack, i was taking him down in one/two round every time.

I think they don't level up until they become a Jedi. But even then, i would think level 2 would be impossible.

i've heard of people killing bendak as level 2 scoundrel so i think it's possible. difficult and somewhat of a cheat but it's possible.
