Did they fix all the stuff thats broken with it? Cuz the game has serious quest bugs and some engine bugs too. Some of them were fixed in homebrew patches, but I doubt Steam will be using those.

Good idea to see if existing patches work with the Steam version. There is no forum tied to the Kotor 2 Steam page, though I thought it would be the same as for Kotor 1. They might update with a forum link in the coming days.

My KOTOR 2 discs got scratched a couple months ago and I did a Windows reinstall before realizing it, so this is nice. Might get this rather than ordering new discs.

I doubt much has been fixed; Steam makes no effort to get old games running on newer machines like gog.com does. As for the homebrew fixes, they may not work with the regular Steam version of the game, but some of the fixes involve using a modified .exe; replacing Steam's .exe with the modified .exe will probably make the fixes work.

Fun game. As far a old games on Steam, I personally have not had very good luck with them. I got Titan Quest on Steam because my old disks were damaged and have had several hard locks that required shutdown and restart. I never had any problems with the game installed from CD. It is too bad that Steam does not try to optimize the old games for modern hardware.

Also:

"Its the untouched version, But if you are looking for fixes and improvements,

Look no further than this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-sith-l...ent-mod-tslrcm

Also i have been hearing problems about the mod\bugfix\improvement not working for steam, so you might have to stay tuned.

Update: It turns out that the mod DOES work for steam, but in the steam properties menu you have to tell it to "Do Not Automatically Update This Game" Otherwise steam will redownload the old broken stuff."

Can you tell I'm excited about this? For w/e reason the moddb link above does not work, but I thought the rest of the message was useful.

Anyways, about the actual game itself. KOTOR 2 is a very good game. To compare it with KOTOR 1, KOTOR 1 was a very Star Wars-y game. It had the interesting setting, fleshed out characters, entertaining and sometimes moving writing, an epic feel of a galaxy being at war, the jaw-dropping plot twist that changes everything, etc. It did a lot to capture the feel of the original Star Wars film trilogy (arguably better than the prequel film trilogy did). All in all, a fantastic piece of gaming entertainment.

KOTOR 2, on the other hand, is almost not a Star Wars game. The general feel of the game is more moody and thoughtful. It's a darker take on the concepts of the Force, Jedi, and Sith, and you as the main character get more development. One could say that the thematic core of KOTOR 2 is much stronger than KOTOR 1. It's a bit more low-key, as instead of the grand war against the Sith taking place there's a secret war with the Sith quietly persecuting the Jedi to extinction. On paper it's every bit as good as KOTOR 1, and in some ways even better.

The problem though is that KOTOR 2 was infamously rushed by LucasArts and Obsidian Entertainment, the developer, had to cut a bunch of content. Most specifically the ending feels a bit too sudden and barebones -- not that it's a bad ending with regards to the story and writing *coughMassEffect3cough* it just had a bunch of its content stripped to meet the deadline. Over the years fans have been working on mods to restore the content, and a full restoration mod is now available. If you're going to play the game I would highly recommend using the mod.

It's a more grown-up version of Star Wars, as you'd expect from Obsidian.

There's an influence system, and a dark side path that's more about power and control than kicking puppies while going "muahaha!"

There's crafting of weapon parts, and building your perfect saber is much more fun than in KOTOR 1 and SW TOR.

I enjoyed it quite a bit without the fan patch, despite the rushed ending, enough to do full playthroughs as both light and dark. Aside from chopped out content there were only a couple of minor bugs in the "pure" game that I noticed, you can definitely play without the fan patch.

I played part way through the fan patch before getting distracted by something shiny. For the couple of planets I played through the restorations were pretty minor. I didn't get to the (spoiler) factory.

I'll be picking this up if its on sale at xmas, even though I still have my CDs.

I just started replaying 1 on Steam, and have no idea where my discs are for 2 so this is pretty good news.
