It hasn't been unknown for people to like the Porta Pro better than the Grado SR-60, not to mention the SR-40. It's a great headphone. In fact the main complaint that audiophiles complain about is too much (mid) bass, which should actually please a lot of normal consumers.

Props go to austonia for mentioning www.head-fi.com 😉

I will be looking forward to comparing the two when my order comes in.

Please post your findings. I've been long planning to get a pair of Grados and if the Porta Pros are actually better there's no need.... except for the fact the Grado pair aren't butt ugly 🙂

After comparing both, I would say the Porta Pro is a much better buy than the Grado SR-60's, because they are less than half the price, smaller, lighter, more comfortable, and are, of course portable. They also sound more bassy as reported earlier, so I pick the Porta Pros for all of the above reasons.

anyone know how these compare to the ones at Radio Shack that are on sale for 25 bucks?

if your speaking othe these link avoid these I work at radioshack and the vast majority of these get returned. Last mounth we had a deal on the pro 45s for 19.99 which are a very good Headphone, and i think use the same speakers as the portapros

Radio Shack must be having inventory clearance. As always, YMMV. I got three pairs of the Pro-45s for $9.99 each. The guy who sold them to me complimented me on my choice. I left two in the store. Couldn't find it for sale on the website but here's a product link:

The porta pros are the best sounding open or closed phones for under $50, period. Earbuds or clipons are another matter, as are phones over $50.

BTW: This deal has been around forever. I think that this is a repost, but its good to get a "deal is still around" post, anyway.

Both true. PortaPros are the best cans under $50. I have a pretty good selection to compare them with. I have owned or do own Sennheiser MX500's, Grado SR80's, Koss PortaPro & KSC-35 & KSC-50, Sennheiser PX100 & PX200, Sony D66SL and D77 eggos, BeyerDynamic DT770 & 931's. If anyone is curious about some of these shoot me an email.

The best heaphones in the > $100 range IMO are the Sony D66SL eggos, import from Japan only (www.audiocubes.com)

also, anyone intersted in headphones, the definitive forum is www.HEAD-FI.COM

how are the MX500 ? dont earbuds have a limitation to quality... because theyre drivers are only so large? well, i guess everything is relative..just are you pleased with themk?

I bought Koss headphones a while back and I love it!!
Ibought mine like 3 years ago, and Its been through some abuse - and its still in great shape!!

Thanks to Entropism from FW; search there for "Koss" to find the promo code

Koss has a sale on their PortaPro headphones, normally $50, now $25 after promo code.

Shipping is around $5-6 IIRC.

These headphones are U-G-L-Y (you ain't got no alibi!) but man, for $25 you can't find a better pair. The bass response is phenomenal -- the rated 20hz low end frequency response is pretty damn close, you can FEEL the bass coming out of these things. Very clear sound too. My only complaint is the super-short 4' cord...and the fact that they look like relics from the 80's. But they fold nicely and come with a carrying case...

Thanks for the shout-out...sounds like one of those can't miss deals. Going to see if they have any left.

um....should I get this? How is this compared to the Grado SR60? May get this one as it is less than half the price if the sound quality is close enough.

Read the posts above. Some say it's comparable, or even better. At its original price, it would be a toss-up between the two. At this price, however, I'd say the Koss has the definite lead.

I don't get it??? Where or what is FW???

I guess I can forgive you for not reading through the whole post. It's the Hot Deals forum shorthand for fatwallet. Check the forums there for the coupon code. At one point we weren't even allowed to mention that site by name so FW is the standard alias. 🙂

My porta pros just came in today. I haven't broken them in yet, but initial reaction is slightly negative compared to the Grado SR-60. There is definitely more mids/bass, and hiss is more evident than the grado's, because they are not quite as loud (requiring you to increase your source volume). Also, portability comes at the cost of being annoying to put on your head, due to the design, but the hey, they have been around since like '86, so apparently the design pro's outweigh the con's. I'll burn them in tonight and give any differences tomorrow...

FYI - SB audigy -> Logitech Z-560 amp -> Porta Pro's. Windows volume ~40%, Winamp volume ~85% or so, Logitech volume knob is at about 1:45 to 2 oclock, listening to mp3's ripped w/ --r3mix and --alt-preset extreme settings in lame

SORRY ABOUT THAT. PERHAPS NEXT TIME I SHALL JUST REPLY WITH HIGHLIGHTING AND CAPS INSTEAD. I WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE MY REPLY EASIER TO READ. MY SINCERE APOLOGIES. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN.

😉 😛

I am happy with mine, although the cord was way too short (4') to use plugged in to the back of my computer which sits under my desk. $7 and a trip to Radio Shack later, all is good. How can I "burn in" these headphones?

Stop with the crazyness, my eyes hurt reading your posts amnesiac. Er, yea I just ordered a pair, I have the R80's for home use and they are great.

i was never a big headphones fan..but because of all the hype and the right price i decided to purchase these puppies. i bought the 5$ extension cable (you need to get this), and the shipping was 5$ totalling to 35$

it came in today. i plugged it into the SB Live! Value and was quite disappointed. then i tooled around all my sounds setting, turning off all the EQ + artificial sound processing, and set the Creative driver to headphones instead of speaker... WOW! these things are frigging aunbelievablle. If youre worried about its unfriendly looks...theyre alot smaller in person and not as aesthetically 'offensive'. theyre really nice. im gonna carry them around from now on. it comes with a neat thick carrying pouch , too.

you guys contemplating this deal should really really get in on it

i hope hifi.com has another sale the sr60/80's soon. need to get me some grado goodness. heh.

BUMP this deal is still valid!
burning in means playing music through the phones for about 50 hours to loosen up the drivers (which are stiff initially). The sound usually improves considerably after burn in.

I've had a pair of these for a year now, and they've been great. I don't think they look THAT ugly, definitely retro though; its remained unchanged since it first came out in '87. The fact that Koss even still makes these and that people are still buying them is a testament of what a great inexpensive pair of headphones these are. As far as truly portable headphones go, they don't get any better than this. And nothing under the 50 dollar range touches these.

The Grado's and Sony MDR-v6 is great but they are neither truly portable or cheap, so you cant really compare the PortaPros to them.

it will be great if KSC35 still alive............

Just got mine today. They have great BASS response but might get a little annoying after extending period of use. They don't have the full range of sound as my R80's but they are awesome for portable headphones. In fact, these have more BASS response then my R80's but I think the R80's are a bit more balanced. I listened to a pair of Senneiser(sp?) 577's(er 557, I can't remember) and damn those things hit the spot. I may have to get a pair of those once my R80's break.
