I noticed the Koss Compact DVD Player on Sale at Target today for $99.00. EDIT: It's now on sale for $79. Thanks iahk! It plays DVD/CD/VCD/MP3/JPG Files. Outputs include Composite Video/Audio (RCA Type Plugs), Optical Digital Output (!), Component Video Output, S-Video Output. It comes with a Wireless Remote. On a player of this price I would have expected a coaxial digital output, so being a MiniDisc user, I was quite pleased.

I decided to buy it and have been playing with it for the past few hours. On the positive side, everything seems to work ok. It appears to be the same DVD Decoder that the latest Apex DVD Players use. The chapter skip function is very fast, and the picture quality is as good as any Apex I've ever seen.

Note that the jpg picture function is an unadvertised feature. Neither the box or "the front page of" the manual even mention it. Being the inquisitive individual that I am, I tried out a disc full of jpg files and it played them just fine. *EDIT* Discovered later by "Hawk" that the manual does mention this feature.

The wireless remote is very responsive. I was surprised, as the similar (but larger) Apex models have remotes that you really have to point directly at it with the right angle to get it to work.

The negative aspects include no SVCD support EDIT: It *does* play SVCD. sacredlettuce from another forum pointed out that his worked. So I tried burning a full SVCD (I'm new to this) and it worked! My test SVCD disc must be bad. So the only negative aspect is the color of the actual unit is pretty ugly. This is from Target's "Hip Hues" line, so it comes in Purple, Neon Blue, and some even worse ones (like poka-dots I believe).

The most disappointing part for me is that it doesn't run on any type of batteries. It must be used connected to a wall outlet. I suppose a car adapter would work for it (and then you could buy a portable LCD Screen, which would also need a power supply), but this unit is compact and portable, but not meant to be used "portably" (or something like that). So it's good for taking with you on vacation only if the TV in your hotel room has input jacks.

I'm still trying to decide if I should keep it. I really like the fact that I can move it around my room to hook up to my minidisc recorder, and it does seem to work very well overall. But then again, other than the optical output and component video output jacks, it has the same features as the Mintek DVD Player on sale at Best Buy or Circuit City for around $60. So if optical output and component output are not needed, there's no real reason for anyone to get this player.

But if you like small and the above mentioned extra features, it's worth a shot.

Also, I've been looking around the net trying to find a picture of it. This seems to be a Target Only device. It even says "Distributed by Target Corporation" on the bottom.

According to the manual, it is 8.26in(W) x 6.30in(L) x 1.33in(H). 1.3lbs.

The Model Numbers are DVP2161 through DVP2165. I assume every color has a different model number. Mine (the Neon Blue) is DVP2163.

Thats the uglies thing i've ever seen. Go to walmart and you can purchase and APEX one for $69.00. It has all the features, MP3/Jpg but it features a digital coax output not optical. I also use my MD's a lot, but coax is just as good... and help with those copyrights ;-)

In my opinion, the looks are "tolerable." If it was completely black, white, or silver, I'd be totally in love with it.

Definately, if you don't need this small of a unit and don't need optical output or component output, go for the more inexpensive DVD Players (either the Mintek at Best Buy, the Apex at Circuit City, or the Apex at Wal*Mart). They all use the same chipset (ESS Tech) so there's really no difference (although the Apex AD-1200 at Circuit City uses the Zoran Vaddius Chipset, but apparently it's pretty good too). And the Menus on this one are the same as Apex (Mintek deviates slightly, but still the same basic idea, and the AD-1200 at CC is quite different).

Although analog recording for MiniDisc does still sound good, I always prefer to use the Optical Input (to quote Captain Kirk, "...because it's there!"). And of course Coax Digital Output is not compatible with MiniDisc. :(

My girl friend's roommate just bought this thing today, it is actually a pretty nice item for this price. Especially it is portable. The look is a little bit fancy, but not that bad.

I just got it
It plays Region 3 DVDs My mistake it does not. play all region only
region one and All region disks
does the APEX and other brand play all region DVDs?

Good thing about this is that it can play the all region code DVD I bought from Hong Kong which my Sony and Panasonic can't play for some reason.

tested MP3 CD R works great.

I am buying another one
:)

Thanks for the info. I was gonna get this thing sunday but decided to see if there was any info on it. More specifically, SVCD playback. I guess not. It's tiny, has optical digital out, and component out too. Good stuff.

The original post says it has S-video, Component, and composite outputs. As for region and macrovision free, it will be awhile until we find out since this is a fairly new player.

As for DVDr's, you can probably try it yourself. Target has a pretty generous return policy. You have 90 days to return or exchange as long as you keep your receipt.

I bought one too, IMO it's not bad. I mean, 100 bucks for this tiny player (smallest DVD player I've seen besides like in dash one or something), 50 bucks for the LCD, and a 5 dollar power inverter from ebay and you've got a car dvd player setup. =D

Oh, and the JPEG ability IS in the manual.

And this unit takes up very little power, <10W it says in the back. I tried it on my 40 W power inverter and it worked.

Oh and one more thing. The ac adpater output is 12 V DC, so if you have a car adapter that just draws power directly from the battery and fits *should* work fine with this player.

Ah yes, you're right. A small little blurb on the top of page 18 of the manual. Oops.

Well, it doesn't mention it on the box or the front page of the manual so it was still a surprise for me when I unknowingly tried it out! :)

Heh, don't worry about it. Thanks for the credit though. =) I think I am going to return it cause I don't have 100 bucks to burn right now, but the remote is very very good, as you said. And well, if it would stick to my car I would probably keep it, but I guess back to my Dreamcast.

Oh (I know, I've had a lot of Ohs), the warranty is only 90 days, same as Target's refund policy deadline.

FYI: I've just made a discovery that may turn some people off to this DVD Player. Now that I've read the manual in more detail ;) I noticed mention of Orient Power Manufacturering, LTD. This is the same company that makes that dreaded budget DVD Player from the last few years, The Oritron .

Yes, folks, Koss is now owned by Oritron. So basically Oritron, aware of the terrible name recognition they now have from releasing some *really* bad DVD Players over the past few years, has bought the Koss name and is essentially "trying again" in the US Market.

This is confirmed by the Customer Service Address & Phone number in the manual (same as on the Oritron Website). I also saw a Koss DVD Player at Sears tonight and it is definately an Oritron Design.

I'm not bothered by my discovery though. This player is working a heck of a lot better than the other Oritrons I've tried in the past (don't ask how many DVD Player I've owned...you'd more than just vomit). This DVD Player uses a completely different chipset from those horrendous models of the past. Like I said in my original post, this is essentially a Mini-Apex.

But, I did want to share this with people. It can never hurt to keep an open mind for the next 90 or so days. :)

I just wanted to bump this deal since I have been informed and have now personally verified that this little baby DOES play SVCD! I'm watching one I just made (first one). WOW! The picture is a lot better than I had thought. I had to browse to the SVCD folder and then play it, so I may have made a mistake when I created it.

But alas, it works.

EDIT: I did make a mistake! The SVCD Function works flawlessly when you know how to create one. :)

I saw this player when it first came out (@$119) and was thinking about getting it, but, held off. Is there any info yet on the MP3 Capabilities:

  1. Does it play Variable and/or High (>=192Kbps) files?
How many characters does it display of the filename(s)?
Does it have a shuffle play mode? If So, does shuffle span folders?

Anyone know of any B&M Available <$120 Players that has advanced MP3 Features?
Plays Variable &/or HighBitRate MP3's
Displays ID3 Tags or Displays >20Characters of the title
Shuffle play across multiple folders?

The Sampo 631 is the only one that (I know of that) has these features and it's not really available locally.

Thanks!

Hey guys I picked one up and wanted to use it in my car. I have a 12v dc car adapter with the right connector to fit this player. My car adapter however doesn't mention how many milliamps it provides ?, would I be able to use this ?. All it says is that it has a built in fuse ?.

Ps : Atrac, great deal man. I picked up one yesterday. Really nice unit and I can't believe how light and small it is. Definetely worth the $99 considering all it can do.

I am trying to program my Directv remote for use on this DVD player. Anyone know what brand I should use? The code scanning method doesn't seem to work.

So it DOES play svcd's?! Mother of god. It's done with the sale since it's the end of the week but I may be able to pull some strings. I'm gonna have to sell my Lasonic DVD-8090.
