Never owned a digital camera before so i want to make sure i will be getting a good one. I will be going on a mountain trip in August so that is the main reason i want one. I am getting an offer for 200US shipped for this camera (used and a refurb) 128mb sd card, and a case. Is this a good deal? What other cameras should i look at?

I am a beginer photographer

I looked at a couple of my favorite sites DPReview.com and Imaging-resource.com, and they seemed to like it. I don't own the camera, though I've owned a couple of less-than-stellar Kodak digicams in the past. Kodak's tend to be easier to use than most, which is good for a beginner, so from the looks of things, you'll likely be happy with the camera.

If you have any interest in advancing your photography skills, you might want to look at something like the Canon A75 in roughly the same price range (Hot Deals!). It will have automatic point-n-shoot capabilities like the Kodak, but will allow you more advanced control should you decide you need it.

I would NOT get a Kodak, let alone a DX series. They tend to be focused on ease-of-use, especially for the new beginners, but the image quality won't please you. I have experience with a Kodak DX series digicam. It is not bad, but certainly not the best either. It lacks that vibrancy and sharpness that you see in other good digicams especially the Canon cams.

I would recommend the Canon PowerShot A80. It would cost a little more but trust me, you can't go wrong with it. The PowerShot series is amazing.

The image quality of current Kodak camera's is on par and sometimes better than Canons, just read the dpreview and steve-digicams...
from imaging-resource:
... its excellent color and exceptionally capable automatic white balance make it a true "point & shoot" digicam

And while it's true that Kodaks are oriented towards beginners and have very good pricing, $200 is too much for a refurb 3MP DX6340 . I have seen 5MP Kodak cameras for $250 or so in Hotdeals, that would be a good camera for a beginner...

Edit: or the current Canon A300 + 128MB for $120 from Amazon deal is pretty good, too

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Check out these samples from the Canon A70. Compare the sharpness and the vibrant colors compared to the DX6340 picture.

I honestly don't care that much about high detail picture quality. As long as i can take good pictures of mountains for an upcoming mountain trip I would be happy. I will be taking pictures of friends, etc. NOT for advanced photography purposes. Basicly just to replace a film camera.

Friend just gave me this link:

Is it better than the kodak?

Don't know about Olympus cameras. If you have the time, just do some research on your own. Go to dpreview.com and check out the review of this camera (if they have one). It would also be better to post in their forums and other digital-photography related forums.

My friend is big into cameras and has an olympus himself and my family has one for film and it is great! I have done research on the cameras, but can really only read reviews that people have posted because i don't understand much about them. Thanks for the help, and i guess i'll look around some more before buying one.

I own the 6340 w/ the dock. It's a nice camera and the dock/software is very nice and easy to use. I'm not sure you will tell the difference between the best and middle cameras in picture quality for day to day use. You will however notice all the little touches the Kodak system has for the common user.
