Kodak CD-R Quality Issues

Anyone remember a while ago when kodak.com was dumping their Gold CD-R's really cheap? Well, it was posted in the hot deals section, and I (and many others) jumped on the opportunity to get some really really good CD-R's for cheap. Anyways, I have been burning CRITICAL information on these, and have started to run low, so I head over to CDMedia World to see if I can find a good replacement quality wise, however, I notice the following warning under the Kodak CD-R heading:

* = Beware, Kodak does have a line made in Mexico that consistently have bad pre-grooves that don't allow the speed rating of the media to be read correctly. This media has been known to be limited to 1x or 2x record speeds, or none at all. Programs like Feurio will not work with this media.

I check out my CD-R's, and sure enough, they are made in Mexico. I used Nero's data-check after I burned each one to make sure the data could be read back, and every CD I burned passed. I am wondering though, will this issue reduce the CD-R's life? The information on these CD's are critical, and I'm wondering if it's enough of an issue to reburn these on other media.

Doesn't sound to me like the warning pertains to shelf life at all, just to what software you can use and how fast it will let you go. If they are already burned and the copies checked out, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it is THAT critical, it wouldn't hurt to have a second copy around anyway.

I checked some of my kodak gold ultimas, and they said that it was kodak japan, but than it also said that the recording speeds were unknown. Does this mean that these were made in Mexico?

I get the recording speed unknown on all the ones I check. The recording speed info is an option that many manufacturers don't put on the disc for some reason.

I though Kodaks were made in Mexico or Ireland.

The Silver & Gold that I have are top quality!

All kodak's say "Kodak Japan" when you use CD Info or some other program. The way you can tell where they were made is from what the box it shipped in looks like. The CD's themselves look the same. Look here.

I have used Kodaks exclusively for my massive collection of live shows by taper friendly bands,
probably in the vicinity of 1200 to 1500 cds. This project has been an incredible amount of time and work and I will not trust them to anything but Kodaks. I have never had a problem with these disks using CDRWIN, EAC or Nero. They burn flawlessly at whatever the top speed of the burner is. I have used Plextor 8X, Plextor 12X, Smart and Friendly 8X, Smart and Friendly 12X, Teac 8X, Teac 12X, and Teac 16X burners. A lot of these Kodaks I burned were only rated for 6X. IMHO CDMediaWorld is full of crap. I also bought as many of the golds, when they were being discontinued, as I could afford and would not sell them if you offered me $2 apiece.
