If we're going to talk all time point guards, we have to mention Oscar Robertson, and Isiah Thomas, no?

1)kobe
2)payton
3)kidd
4) ???
tracy mcgrady, iverson, marbury, stock, francis, maybe even baron davis so far this year
i definitely don't think stockton deserves 1 2 or 3 on the list this year. He's consistent throughout the years, but he has not been putting up spectacular numbers across the boards like kobe, payton or kidd this year.

First of all, John Stockton doesn't need a Karl Malone. Just because he doesn't shoot the ball all the time, doesn't mean he can't. Season Average is 51% vs. Kobe's 47%.

This won't look very good, but here is a compilation of Kidd, Stockton, Payton, and Bryant.

Plyr G GS MPG FGM-A FG% 3PM-A 3P% FTM-A FT% OFF DEF TOT APG STL BLK TO PF PTS PPG

Kidd16 16 42.7 94-221 .425 17-47 .362 82-107 .766 0.9 5.6 6.6 10.6 43 4 70 39 287 17.9

Payt19 19 41.1 178-393 .453 29-84 .345 85-102 .833 1.3 4.3 5.6 8.5 36 2 57 49 470 24.7

Kobe19 19 40.4 199-420 .474 24-61 .393 126-141 .894 1.3 3.9 5.2 4.6 30 11 67 59 548 28.8

Stock18 18 30.8 69-135 .511 14-27 .519 47-58 .810 0.7 2.1 2.8 9.4 31 5 48 42 199 11.1

Looks like to me, the only thing that really differs at all is the points per game......

Stock has a better 3pt% and way fewer TO's

i don't think 5.6 or 6.6 reb/game vs 2.8 is just a little difference. and payton even doubles his ppg. Bryant leads the league in scoring wwhile shooting a high percentage, while contributing a good deal in other areas as well, unlike SG's like Allan Houston and Reggie Miller.

Yes, Stockton is great, and if its a compliation of careers, stockton will come out on top. But I'm just saying, this year, those three deserve to be on top of him.

Electric Amish: Kobe is shooting 47% on 22.1 FG attempts per game, Stockton is only attempting 7.5 FG's a game, the two aren't really comparable. A guard who is one of his team's main weapons shooting 47% is a great percentage.

True. They are a little un-comparable.

I just can't see how Stockton can't be in the top 5 active Point Guards. His stats are nearly as good as all the others, and better in others. The only large deficiency is PPG and Rebounds.

I'm not saying that Kidd and Payton and maybe Kobe don't belong on that list, but Stockton has to be there too. He has these stats and he's 38 years old for christ's sake!

Stockton IS one of the top 5 active PG, Kobe is a SG. It's just that nobody made a "top 5 PG" list yet.

EDIT-

My top 5 PG (in no particular order)
Kidd
Payton
Stockton
Marbury
Francis (yeah he's a whiner, but he's good)

Prodigy, Pierce is playing the 3 spot cause Kenny Anderson is injured.

Electric, Kevin Willis has a higher shooting percentage than Kobe, does that make him better than Kobe?

Mark- No, we're talking Guards. I already agreed that the number of shots taken makes a difference. Jesus!

Electric,
I definetely agree that Stockton is one of the top guarsd in the league right now, but he gets tough competition for the 4th spot from the guards i mentioned, tracy mcgrady, iverson, marbury, francis, and baron davis. although from a consistency point of view, stock gets the nod because the other guards are so turnover prone.

Electric Amish:

That's where the difference is. I was talking Guards in general, not just point guards. If I was making up my Top 5 list of active PG's it would go like this:

1)Gary Payton
2)Jason Kidd
3)John Stockton
4)Terrell Brandon
5)Steve Francis/Stephon Marbury (i can't decide)

In a two or three years Andre Miller will be at number 2 or 3. He is going to be really good for a long time, I love him.

kobe would annihilate any scoring records if shag wasn't on the same team.

if they didnt have shaq, teams would focus on kobe. in thier current situation the lakers got 2 excellent scoring options which opens things up as opposing teams must account for 2 scoring machines in their defensive schemes.

kobe is the best....and while he may be cocky, he does a lot for the community.

i worked for him at the annual "Kobe Bowl" -- Kobe reserves an entire bowling place and big corporations pay a LOT of money for a bowling lane (i'm talking about $10,000 at least a lane!). Celebrities are invited to be in each lane. For instance, we had Andy Garcia, Michael Rappaport, JLH, Jules Asner, Angie Everhart, etc etc............there bowling with us.

All the money goes to kids. When I was there working for him, he was so gracious and excited to be heading this event. He signed MILLIONS of autographs, took pictures with everyone, talked to anyone who wanted to talk to him, and was a great guy.

So I guess I'm a little biased because I think not only is Kobe doing something positive for his community, but he is a great ball player as well. A lot of those top 5 guards you all mentioned are great players as well, but they don't do anything outside of the NBA.

So my vote will go to Kobe. :)

So what happened to your precious Lakers tonight?

0-11 from the FT line. What a joke. :)

i'm a long time Laker fan, since way back with orlando woolridge and james worthy!, and i used to think Kobe was a ballhog rookie year... but now he's matured a lot and he's playing probably one of the best ALL ROUND games in the league, better D, better awareness offense and defense, and much better outside shooting, GO KOBE! GO LAKERS!!!

kobe may blossom into the best laker ever. if he'd gone to college, he'd be a rookie this year. man the possibilities are frightening.

Still not as bad as Vin Baker's 0-18 streak he had going a few years back with Seattle.
